Since the new US administration had taken office in 2025, it has aggressively pursued an America First policy while abandoning their traditional mutually beneficial approach to trade agreements in North America. Trade wars, tariffs, and declarations such as that Canada will be the 51st state have worsened tensions to a degree that Canadians are quantifiably spending their tourism dollars elsewhere. According to a new Canadian government report, travel to the US has fallen by 25% last year, resulting in $2.3 billion USD less being spent by Canadians on trips to America.

sounds like a normal reaction, offend a friend, and don’t be surprised when they decline a dinner invite

We used to go there just for Mexican food and groceries, let alone averaging <2 weeks a year in travel down there.

We won’t return until this regime is gone.

Are Canadians staying in Canada? As a US person I want to visit BC but I’m concerned it might be quite booked

I live in Windsor which borders Detroit. It takes 15 min to cross the boarder and I used to go for shows, dinner, visit John K. King books. I haven’t been in years now, I love Detroit and I miss visiting! I want to go see some Ballet and Detroit is doing Swan Lake this year. I would love to go but instead I’ll have to drive 4.5 hours to Toronto for my big city adventures.

We (Canada) just paid for a 6 Billion dollar border crossing bridge in my hometown and instead of the excitement that should follow we are subjected to more bullying from the Americans. Well don’t be surprised when we no longer want anything to do with America anymore. We are done with your products, your alcohol, your media and your country.

Hard to feel bad for a tourism sector that just got caught in the crossfire of its own government’s behaviour. Canadians aren’t being spiteful, they’re just acting like anyone would when a neighbour starts trash talking you at every opportunity. The Detroit folks on the Windsor side especially are paying a real price, driving hours past a world class city because crossing the border feels hostile now.

Pretty ironic how the guy that’s spent his life in the hospitality industry is making tourism worse for the nation that he’s leading.
