any reason we aren’t including Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Italy, Austria, or Switzerland?
vladgrinch on
Some European countries (such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Finland and Iceland) do not have a national statutory minimum wage.
Keep in mind that higher wages often come with a higher cost of living, so minimum wage alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Purchasing power can vary significantly from one country to another.

Keep in mind, that in Lithuania it’s a salary on „paper“ Take away ~40% of taxes from it and you will get the real number which is ~850eur.

There’s a catch as always: What percentage of the population works at the minimum wage?
For example, very few people in Bulgaria work for the min wage when half of the Turks works for the min wage. But on the other hand, it is customary for the Turkish work culture to provide food at workplace or provide coupons for food. Also, Turkey has Istanbul where almost no one works at min wage and the salaries are comparable to western Europe in many sectors, in some cases even much higher. At the same time though, Turks don’t receive paid holidays the first year and some necessities of the modern life are ridiculously expensive.
So, these numbers don’t mean much.

Spain is filled to the brim with people earning between 1381€ and 1400€. They raised the minimum, but the mean salary is not higher now.

Would be nice to specify that this are gross salaries and are taxed diferently. For example even if is minimum wage, in Romania is taxed 42.5 %.
German minimum wage is 300€ more than I make in Finland atm 😀
But in otherhand you can live in capital of Finland with only 1400€/month income. (stay alive with minimal leizure)
Edit: 1580€/month, not 1400

Gross wage means absolutely nothing, net net is what matters.
Why? Let me show you one perfect example, Montenegro vs Serbia for 160 hours (full time employee) per month.
Montenegro minimum gross: ~685€ (depends slightly on city to city basis but it’s couple of EUROs difference)
Serbia minimum gross: ~775€ (data you have is not accurate as it shows GROSS1, not GROSS2)
Now take a look at NET NET home takeaway for those two countries:
Montenegro: exactly 600€
Serbia: ~500€

I don’t know if this its with or without taxes but in Spain doesn’t make sense anyway.
Spain minimun wage its 1.424,50€ / Month [17.094 per year] without taxes.
In Spain, now in 2026 doesn’t apply one tax called „IRPF“ (its now 0% which was 2% before). With every mandatory tax left (About 6,50% in total) should be 1.331,91€/Month Taxes included.

The minimum wage in the UK is £12.71 (14.85€) while in Germany it is 13.90€ and Ireland is 14.05€
Even at the lowest exchange rate of this tax year the UK minimum wage would translate to 14.57€ who’s is still higher.

Nordic countries don’t have legal minimum wages, they are negotiated between Unions and employers trough collective bargaining for every specifc field of work.
For example in Finland as per the restaurant industry contract, the minimum wage for kitchen staff and cleaners is 1849€, and for construction workers it’s around 2739€.

It seems there’s a very strong correlation between higher minimum wages and not being able to afford a home:
