Imagine driving a train all day with no loo in sight. No wonder they’re talking strikes; I’d be fuming too if my bladder was the real boss.

They’re taking the piss out of their staff by not taking the piss out of their staff.
Bolshyboys on
Presumably they can’t just abandon their post to use the train shitter at a station stop in the meantime?
Maybe they could do what the Amazon workers do and start urinating in bottles and disposing of it in the station or mess room if the industry doesn’t want to act.
JackStrawWitchita on
Drivers should protest by stopping the train in the middle of a journey, jumping out of the cab and seeking a loo in a nearby cafe before returning to continue the journey.
WillWatsof on
If you’re having to take a shit in the drivers cabin and the company isn’t doing anything about it, then yeah strike.

Just trying to think of the last train I went on that didn’t have a toilet?
Trenbolobaby on
Surely they just use the toilet on the train or at the station when they’re stopped?
Also don’t trains use automatic operation so the driver could go for a piss if it’s a longer leg to the station?

Ah the United Kingdom, where logic and reasonable accommodations go to take a dump.

I support this. The provision of toilet facilities on trains and at stations is unreliable. Station toilets are often locked and, somehow, some train services are allowed to run without a single.toilet onboard.
Hopefully this forces the situation to be improved for everyone.

Improving the toilet situation is a win for us as the general public too. There’s been times where I’ve gone into a busy station, where I was sure there would be toilets, and the toilets have either been out of order or just didn’t exist. The toilets on the trains are hit or miss and that’s regularly commuting to central London, I can only imagine the situation is worse across the rest of the UK.

And yet the issue will magically go away when they get granted another few thousand £ a year.
Any train drivers able to confirm what the longest amount of time someone has to drive for between either a relief driver or turn round at a terminus? Truck drivers have max drive times of 4 hours for this sort of reason, although it’s to ensure they don’t drive tired, does the same not apply to train drivers that the maximum drive time can be their whole shift of 8-10 hours?

After Lewisham 2018, not having toilets on board a train should be a thing of the past.
During Lewisham 2018, pax detrained lineside with 3rd rails still live after being stuck for 3 hours with no heat, no lights, and crucially no toilets.

Store all excretions in bags. Get all drivers to do this for a week. Deposit said bags in head office. Theres always a disconnect between the offices and the people actually doing the work. Collectively dump all your human waste in the middle of the office. Job done.

I think our trains often seem to strike at the slightest inconvenience, but this one I support. To be honest all trains (or at least all stations), need to have toilet facilities, for drivers and the general public. And they need enough time built into their schedules to be able to make use of said facilities.
It’s demeaning to have to piss in a bottle.
Brettriverboatt on
So states LNER, Avanti and EMR being balloted, correct me if I’m wrong but they generally run more modern stock which have multiple toilets and also stop at more substantial stations with decent facilities.
Drivers can absolutely use the toilets if needed en route.
Mentions drivers being scared to drink water on hot days but these Tocs will have air conditioning in the cabs and indeed the drivers would fail the trains if said air conditioning wasn’t working.
The cynic in me thinks it’s a union method of reducing driver hours which would render current diagrams useless and require a lot more drivers

Sanitary facilities are a basic human right.
Valid crashout for the driver tbh.

Cant the driver have a loo next to the driver area.

The problem now of course is that striking isn’t as effective because the revenue shortfall falls entirely on the taxpayer. The operator gets their fixed fee regardless. Probably the only downside to post-covid operations.

Hopefully fully automated trains will be along soon, and these entitled overpaid babies can be all laid off.

If there’s one profession who think they’re literally Gods, it’s train drivers… just give it a fucking rest, ffs.

I would too. And with trains, if they’re needing to go, it can become a safety issue by becoming an unneeded distraction.
TinDumbass on
Intercity trains in the midlands often only have a single loo and run all day, so by evening when people have had a few drinks, they’re all out of service.
Intercity platforms and stations also don’t have bathroom facilities.
It’s a pathetic lack of foresight and human dignity
