Interesting, Dutchies have lots of jokes about Australians living upside down and such. Turns out they’re 3000km away lol. We should change the jokes to New zealanders.
One of my worst disapointment as a kid was to understand that China was actually not the „other side of the world“, but even worse, that there was only water there.

I am from South Africa and live in the western USA. Back when we immigrated, it took us over 30 hours to travel to the USA (with four kids under 8; I was one of the kids).
This map makes it clear why it took so long. My relatives who migrated later were pretty split over whether they flew east or west. West is shorter, but not by very much.

Shows well how much Eurasia and North America are closer to the North pole, than southern continents to the South pole. Northernmost parts of Europe are literally on the same latitude as the coast of Antarctica. The fact that Europe has such inhabitable climate (thanks to the Gulf stream) is really a geographic anomaly.
I live in Texas and I got to visit Diego Garcia, which I believe is a close to the antipode as I can get.

The Pacific Ocean is so large, it contains an antipode. South Pacific Ocean near the southern tip of Peru and then over to South China Sea just off Hanoi, Vietnam. If you were to dig through the center of the earth from either of them, you would start in the Pacific Ocean and end up still in the Pacific Ocean.

The only antipode India has is Easter Island (it will be antipodal to a very small part of India’s largest province: Rajasthan in north-west India). I don’t think it shows up on this map (not surprising, considering Easter island is a tiny speck in the Pacific).

I always loved the fact that Okinawa is the closest antipode land to my hometown, whenever I watched any animes located in Okinawa, I’d be like „its so crazy that these imaginary people are basically the furthest they can be from me“
So if I want a wife from the literal other side of the world, my choices are limited to natives of the Chatham Islands. There’s like a thousand of them so it would be difficult, but I’ve failed with better odds so no shame in failing with worse

I’m sure that decades ago the Antipodes map had NZ overlapping slightly with UK (Scotland). I’m assuming that I imagined this because I doubt it’s something that could have been revised/corrected recently…?

South Georgia and – one or two of – the sandwich islands have an antipode in very rural east Russia…
So if you were adventurous you could put a piece of bread on one of the islands, and a remote spot on Russia and make an earth sandwich sandwiching the sandwich islands!
