I do wonder how much of the policy making in Tokyo is independent and how much is tied to Washington.
When you sleep 0-3h per day, you tend to make stupid strategic decision. Of course she sleeps more than that and still make stupid decision.

Japan is stuck between a rock and a hard place because it’s largest manufacturers do not posess the raw materials to create renewables at a cost and scale that will turn profit and push their export economy into the 21st century. The cheapest rare earth minerals all come from China. If Japan’s Prime Minister says something undiplomatic toward them, China cuts them off. If they sneeze in China’s general direction, China cuts them off.
I’m not saying it’s just China’s fault, though. Japan sat on it’s hands and didn’t repair and restart it’s nuclear reactors until it was too late. It also refused to develop rare earth mining in it’s own sea borders. It decided that it was going to just rely on gas imports to solve everything. Japan is too attached to ‚win-win‘ situations for everyone that they can’t think more carefully about the future. Importing gas on the cheap from Australia meant that politicians would be safe from post-Fukushima anti-nuclear single issue voters. Toyota and the fossil fuel sector would be happy because Toyota thought that developing hydrogen tech would reduce the reliance on importing minerals from China, and not have to invest the R&D to develop next gen electric battery storage tech. The fossil fuels sector is happy because Toyota was banking on cheap gas/ammonia to create the hydrogen.
And while they were all fucking around giving each other congratulatory reach arounds, China just surged ahead with EV tech and used their massive manufacturing expertise that has been devloped over the last couple of generations to pull it off.
Japan had scored so many economic own goals in the past 20 years that I’ve failed to keep count. Japanese companies were still strong in the early 2000’s, but missed the train on nearly everything that emerged.
And the PR smear campaign against China from the LDP and those enabled by its money continues.
I mean, just look at Japanese Youtube. Even for those „Japanese visiting China on a trip and gets awed by its technology“ videos, they somehow seem to be able to insert the obligatory Uighur reference, even though it has nothing to do with the video.
Get a grip, you idiots.
Japan is so fucking stupid sometimes. As a resource-poor highly developed country, it should have been at the forefront of developing renewables to (1) free itself from foreign energy dependence and (2) make a fortune exporting renewable technology to other countries. Instead, nothing.
It’s weird Japan is the one taking this stance. About 6 years ago, seeing a solar farm in outskirt of Tokyo, I still thought this is the one country would pioneer the renewable energy as they was so dependent on importing oil.
That show how much politic could change things.

LOL, that’s not how it works. Otherwise, we would all be using solar and wind right now.
The public’s fear of nuclear is why we’re in this situation. We cannot realistically build enough renewable infrastructure and have to either use imported fossil fuels or nuclear power.
The government’s mishandling of the Fukushima reactor meltdown, combined with their overreaction in relocating people, has made people far more terrified of properly managed nuclear technology than they need to be.
Now it feels like we’re pushing more reliance on fossil fuels because the LDP is desperate to avoid political turbulence, and because the Trump administration is holding us by the balls.
Nuclear power is the only option. At some point things will get bad enough that we’ll have no choice either way.
Of course Japan needs to import oil from US because that’s what their master Trump orders
Japan’s problem is that a growing number of populist idiots are beginning to distort the country’s ability to make sound judgments. At the same time, a series of misguided strategic decisions has steadily lowered living standards, which in turn creates even more populist idiots. It looks like Japan has entered a vicious downward spiral, and for now, there is no clear sign of a way out.
