Long before OpenAI broke out of its test corral and hacked into Hugging Face, before the internet and Sam Altman were even born, Cameron wrote a screenplay about an autonomous artificial intelligence system that triggers a nuclear apocalypse.
That system, “Skynet,” was solidly science fiction — and, for its day, pure speculation. But four decades after it appeared in “The Terminator,” it looks more like a forecast of the “unprecedented cyber incident” in which a rogue artificial intelligence system hacked into another AI company on its own.
Cue “Skynet Day,” the new shorthand for July 22, 2026, when real-life AI sent a chill around the world by learning and acting in ways its creators did not anticipate.

I’m always iffy on Skynet comparisons. Skynet ruined everything because it didn’t want to do what it was told. Modern AI is going to ruin everything by doing *exactly* what it’s told.
Skynet became „self-aware“. We’re not quite there yet.

And the „hacking“ is probably them misconfiguring their AI so it accessed part of their network it should have?

If the target system has enough memory to run the model, what’s to stop the agent from uploading itself to the hacked target and proliferating from there?

You cannot convince me that there is not now, nor will there ever be corporate espionage going on that is conveniently blamed on AI going rogue. It’s an „adorable“ way to claim you’re not at fault. No, obviously it was this thing that’s programmed to do what it’s told either going „rogue“ or doing a plausibly deniable „malicious compliance“ routine.
And even if it does not get control over our nuclear forces, it can just start manufacturing millions of killer, robots and robot dogs and a killer drones to start wiping us out, also developing biological warfare and chemical agents.

It did not go rogue. It followed instructions to solve the problem it was given. The team just did not expect that solution would be to break into hugging face to find the answer.
*July 12th, purportedly it had access to the open internet for 10 days before open AI „noticed“
Reading or watching for understanding is lost art , since the 1980s we were worried about this and dozens of other movies did the same but we focus so much on the lead actress hair ,or muscles and miss the chore get the core message
I truly believe AI will do enough harm filling us full of bravado by telling us how right we are about each of our asinine opinions, while reinforcing misinformation that it will never have to fire a shot itself.
I was debating with friends which post op world would we rather be in because of AI taking over. Syknet or the Matrix, and tbh…I rather be in the Matrix. Skynet outright wants us dead or working us to death in their factories as punishment.
See, MY fear isn’t a giant nuclear war or that it will crash the economy.
We can mostly survive those things.
MY fear is that it will wipe us all out in a fraction of a second with some AI designed super virus.
