The proposed technology is geothermal enhanced compressed air energy storage (CAES) using abandoned oil and gas wells. Excess renewable energy compresses air into old wells, where underground heat improves performance (by around 9.5% in simulations) . The stored air can later generate electricity when solar or wind output is low.
Another way to say abandoned: not valuable to private companies any longer, so now someone else’s problem.
3.9 million? 3.9 million! How on earth are there almost 4,000,000 abandoned oil and gas wells? This is absolutely mind-boggling.
This is the one. This is how you get everyone to push towards renewable energy. Not because it’s the most efficient or best idea, but because this can keep the oil companies in the loop and keep lining their pockets with money, which is the main reason renewable energy is being held back.
Nearly every well sight would do well to have a windmill on it. Pays the landowner more and is better for all. Less waste of oil resources to extract it too. The pumping unit doesn’t need to drink and burn gas.
