A classic optical illusion based on comparison. Because Uruguay is situated next to two of the world’s ten largest countries, it appears truly small.

    2. Not really? So it is the size of a bunch of very small countries combined?

    3. Uruguay’s got 1 big city and 3.4 million people. Benelux + Switzerland got loads of cities and like 40 million people.

    4. What I get from this is that the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland are not that small after all. I wouldn’t have guessed they stretch that far accross Uruguay. My mental image of Uruguay was that it’s a fairly large, flat country, and would dwarf small European countries more than this.

The fact that they have a tiny population for that size is probably the main reason for why people think this way

… proceeds to fit four tiny European nations into it.

(I live in one of them, I can visit 4 different nations within a few hours train ride. That means we’re tiny.)

I remember in French lessons in middle schools we had to describe our country. One colleague said „our country is biig… (Romania)“ and the teacher immediately went „what if you compare it to Peru?“

It’s bigger than the smallest countries in the continent with the smallest countries? lmao

    9. Hey babe!

New map comparing sizes of a random country with European ones just dropped!

Oh gosh, Europe is really small!

This weird to me, those are also just tiny countries….

Imagine me making the same meme of the Netherlands, fitting Andorra, Liechtenstein and Luxemburg in it.

Does that make the Netherlands big all of the sudden? Or did I just demonstrate that I know a few countries even smaller than the Netherlands.

The fast hydrofoil ferry takes 2.5 hours to cross the „river“ from Montevideo to Buenos Aires.

      It really isn’t.

“A small South American country the size of several small European countries” is exactly where I would have pegged it.

    13. More cows than people! (3.4 million people and around 12 million cows!)

I love that one of the former Presidents was a farmer who continued to live on his farm after being elected and drove around sometimes in an old VW. (Jose Mujica)

    14. Uruguay is bigger than 4 tiny countries is like saying your dick is bigger than newborn’s. Uruguay still is in the bottom half of countries, specially if you discount tiny island nations.

    15. As a Dutchman: our countries are truly small though. I dont think there are many routes where you need to take more than 3h30 to drive from point A to point B. We complain if we have to drive more than 1 hour.

Not going to lie, this makes Uruguay seem smaller than I would have thought.
