Why would he call an election? It wouldn’t benefit him. He already has the power and he’s not running from his crimes like Farage.
Polling despite what people say, is static for Scottish independence, there’s no additional pressure to call a referendum than there was before. I’m from Scotland and I really don’t want this instability, life is fine.
And there’s no advantage to labour to call a general election now with such a massive majority , and no mandate for them to be forced to call one as we don’t elect prime ministers, we elect parties.
If you take it that the indy vote was once in a generation, interesting question of how long a generation is in politics..
I think people who decry ‚I didn’t vote for this‘ really need to educate themselves.
American politics has infested so much of British electoral opinion that the very basic fact that you vote for the party NOT the person is totally lost on people.
You can dislike the process and advocate for change that’s fine, but every time this happens people take the stance that they’re owed a snap election because of the change in leader and cabinet, but by casting your vote for one of the major parties then whining about ’not voting for a new leader‘ you’ve essentially signed the T&C’s without reading them.
The Greens for example hold leadership elections internally every 2 years, and you don’t even have to be an MP to be leader I believe. Every party has different mechanisms for choosing and ousting their leaders, and it’s on the voter to educate themselves on them. If the ‚I didn’t vote for this leader‘ is such a massive issue for people then you should vote for a different party idk what to tell people.
Good. A snap election for a new prime minister spits in the face of the British political system – people need to come to terms with the fact that you vote for an mp, they choose the prime minister.
He’s not going to do that because he’s evidently not a fool. What PM with a majority is going to risk losing it because opposition are asking them to? You think Farage would do the same if it was the opposition requesting it and not himself doing it as a PR stunt to cover up his dodgey £5m?
Both announcements we were always going to be the case. He needs time as PM and he’s not going to cause political turmoil by having a long running independence campaign in Scotland. Personally if the SNP does want to leave they should be advocating for a UK wide vote as I suspect they might get their way IMO.
As annoying as Sturgeon was at least she used to try and set out some kind of timetable for when it might be okay to hold a second referendum
Swinney’s strategy seems to just be to claim there’s an overwhelming sentiment for it (which polling doesn’t reflect) and constantly ask whoever is PM if he can hold one

His are novelty and pointless of course, but that doesn’t stop him.
I don’t want another election… But I do find it hilarious that all the people that said it wasn’t necessary when they changed their leader are up in arms there will be no election, and the people that were up in arms when the other side didn’t call an election are now cool with there not being one.
The hypocrisy all round is delicious.

You only call a snap election if you don’t have a large enough majority to get your upcoming policies through… In the hope sentiment has improved and you can win some more seats… No other reason for it!

Well duh
Labour have a huge majority and Burnham has said he’s happy to govern in line with the party’s 2024 manifesto. There is no tactical reason to have an election and no moral reason why they should require one. The party and manifesto were elected PM, not really Starmer individually.
Of course politicians of both colours like to play their silly games with this argument so you can probably find a quote of Burnham saying that Sunak should have called one immediately, but that’s all it is, game-playing.
And Scotland had a vote on secession not very long ago, 12 years is not a long time for a rerun on such an important issue. Most countries wouldn’t have allowed such a vote even once. The mere position that leaving the UK is a possible near term outcome is bad for Scottish business and investment, it creates huge uncertainty, and to some extent that applies to the whole UK economy as well. UKgov should make a clear statement that it’s completely off the table for at least 30 years, allowing companies to invest in a stable Scotland.
So… How do the Scottish get a vote then, are these some clear goals or a set timeline?

Snap election, of course not. But Scottish independence, who are you to say no? It’s up to the Scot’s if they want that vote surely?
Well, as much as I don’t know the man, I do agree with him on this matter;
When you vote for a party, you are not just voting on it’s leader, you are voting for their manifesto. It’s why I did not support a snap election when Brown took precedent from Blair. Or when May, left fort Johnson.
As for Scottish independence, with all due respect, they had their for vote, just ten years ago. How many years apart from votes do we need to allow before another democratic election is called on any subject matter? One decade? One generation? Once every census?
Good, political theatrics, stalling actual governance and putting the actual union at risk is the last thing the country needs.
Anyone in favour of these is objectively unpatriotic. It’s not helpful.
