In before all the detractors come in here saying „we need to diversify because the US is worse“ which might be true but that doesn’t excuse the unsavory actions of others. Our government seems to treat national security as a complete joke

China has consistently conducted cyber attacks on us and invests in weird secret police operations within our country, violating Canada’s sovereignty. Remember the Chinese spy balloons? Shot down via NORAD thanks to the US. Canada couldn’t manage it due to a lack of F-35s, since our defense capabilities were never updated under Trudeau. Not to mention Nortel and the Huawei debacle, we should be leaders in that space but somehow Chinese IP’s transferring Nortel documents into China is fine? We just forget about that? Insane to me. To put it into perspective, Nortel was once 1/3 of the TSX stock market in Canada.
To emphasize, China has consistently conducted hostile acts against Canada and should not be trusted in any capacity. Canadians should educate themselves about the so-called “ wumao”. They should remember that China does not respect other cultures or countries, look up the Uighur genocide currently underway in China, for an easy example.

It’s worth unpacking how the Chinese National Security Law works. It basically means that any Chinese person or entity can be made to collect intelligence for the Ministry of State Security. The PRC will use leverage to make you comply, including threatening extended family in China. This is not to excuse alleged espionage in any way, but it certainly highlights how loyalty to Canada for people with ties to China can be compromised.
