I remember the government cracking down on prostitution years ago (along with shutting down Hooker Hill), and it seems to have roughly worked? The article says that there’s been a 13% reduction since 2016.

whaaaaat. Isn’t this… a LOT? Maybe I’m misunderstanding. Does this mean if you grabbed any random early 20s or college aged student walking down the street, there is basically a 50% chance he has slept with a prostitute before? Kind of a culture shock
pls don’t shoot the messenger, i’m not condoning or condemning the behavior, but I wanna explain what my friend (who used to run a brothel) said:
There’s a surprising amount of young guys coming in. You’d think it’s just mostly older guys but the economics of the situation are this:
a.) you could pay ~$100 to have sex
or
b.) you could go out on a date (~$50-100), then go pay for a motel (~$50-80), with the possibility of having sex or the possibility of getting rejected
A lot of young men would just rather pay less for a sure thing.
Again, I’m not here to say whether it’s right or wrong or what young men should do, just passing along what I heard. I personally have never gone to a brothel and (especially as a foreigner) most likely never will, but that’s just my personal decision
Interesting fact is that US military veterans have a similar percentage (34%) vs the stat for Korean men (37%) who are virtually all veterans. Wonder if military culture has any influence on paid sex.
And they are accusing gays of STDs lol
One thing worth investing in, and an area where South Korea lags behind many other developed countries, is comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education.
Evidence shows that effective sex education isn’t just „how babies are made.“
It teaches consent, healthy relationships, respect for boundaries, recognizing grooming and abuse, online safety, communication skills, gender equality and mutual respect, age-appropriate information about sexual orientation and gender identity, contraception and STI prevention, and how to practice safer sex.
Studies have found it improves knowledge, increases condom and contraceptive use, and helps young people identify, prevent, and report sexual exploitation.
It also does NOT make kids more sexually active or change their sexual orientation or gender identity, despite common misconceptions and claims often promoted by some right-wing media and advocacy groups.
Why are such topics discussed on reddit in English among foreigners? Nosey culture at its best.
I’ve only had 1 Korean gf in my life, she told me she had had 8 sexual relationships before me and I really had no reason to believe she was lying about it. This very topic came up once and she was adamant there was no way any of her exes would have done so (despite odds being against it statistically), but even more surprising/disturbing was she was very ignorant about STDs and just kept saying there’s no way her exes would have had them.
I’m in my 40s as is my ex now, so I wonder if the younger generation has better sex ed now?
