„The Minister also said there needs to be a “cultural change” regarding the State’s role in housing.
Delivering social and affordable homes is important, he said, but the Government must also facilitate the delivery of private homes because the State “cannot provide every home that everybody needs”.
He also said allowing the State’s affordable-housing agency to build more homes for private sale will lead to an increase in social and affordable housing.
He added that income generated from the sale of private homes by the Land Development Agency (LDA) will be quickly “recycled” to provide more housing for social tenants and affordable purchasers.
“I think this is an appropriate measure. I think it will lead to even more social and affordable homes being delivered,” he said.“
Are we sure he didn’t mean to say „any“?

Just remember, the demographic of nearly everyone who votes FF/FG are home owners so never need to worry about these things.

It is the states responsibility to either build the houses or create the conditions/infrastructure for affordable housing to be created. It is absolutely the states job to make sure their citizens can be housed. They are failing that and using this as an excuse to dodge their responsibilities.

But noone is asking the state to provide every home.
If the state owned 30-40% of the renters market they could dictate the price of rent without needing to use rent control.
He said „every“ but I think he meant „any“.
What a strawman.
Why do we have to hear about how great our GNI is, how many billions we have in surplus, how many great government ideas are being investigated by private consultations?
Can we not just get anything out of our tax money without someone who has friends in ministerial positions getting a good greasing beforehand?
Why does our culture have to change to suit millionaires and billionaires?
Most people I know aren’t even worried about buying a house or apartment anymore, they’re worried about having money for groceries and bills.
And yet they feel the need to kick people in the teeth with statements like this, change your culture so some people who already have more than they need can continue to gain more.

i That the citizens (all of whom, men and women equally, have the right to an adequate means of livelihood) may through their occupations find the means of making reasonable provision for their domestic needs.
Cannot wait until they try remove that. Of course I know they wont, but it is disgraceful an actual Minister would make statements in contravention of the constitution.
Trickledown housing, folks. Eventually, a bedroom might make its way down from the rich folk and you can make use of it. Once you can afford the rent, of course.

Apparently, they cannot provide ANY homes. When only 7% of people between the ages 25-39 own their own home, it’s more than a cultural problem… What a pathetic way of thinking.

They used to provide the vast majority of homes. Certainly in urban areas. It worked too. But…they buggered that up back in the 70s.
This is so disengeneous. No one is saying they should provide every home. They should be providing alot of homes which is something they have repeatedly failed to do in all their years of government. They are just buying available housing stock and building none of their own. They’ve failed completely minister after minister.
I was under the impression that the state is supposed to provide something, but I guess just like water, power, communications, healthcare, education (and to some extent policing lmao) this is just another thing the private sector is supposed to fix?
Why do we even pay taxes if we’re supposed to do everything ourselves?
No one is asking them to.

The government is completely on the leash of the private property sector. They cannot accept that these companies have taken the people of Ireland for a ride.
The ever present ideology of FF/FG, a developer could buy up all the houses in Galway and knock em down for a golf course and the minister would still care more about their balance sheet than anything else.
FFG are beyond disingenuous. No one, anywhere for once second suggested they should or could. We may have suggested they take an increased role from their historic lack of involvement.

But was also happy enough to accept over 18,000 IPO applications for 2024 (up 40% on previous year), many which would have been highly dubious or featured flushed passports down a toilet of an airplane before landing.
The state doesn’t build any houses it just buys them from developers which puts the average person in competition with them then.

This should be enough to topple a governmemt, bring about an election and then never see this person in public ever again. It is the states job to make sure every person can find a place a to live. We absolutely cannot allow them to start skirting that responsibility.
