I’m all for abolishing the senate and the electoral college.
Why don’t we start with something that is actually possible. Age limits, and if you don’t show up to work for 30 days, you are automatically removed from office.
Can we just focus on expanding the house? Constitutional changes are really hard right now.
The Senate is extraordinarily important piece of the legislature. It’s essentially what gives the States semi-independence from the Federal Government which is VERY important.
What the USA has that representative governments on say Europe doesn’t have is the strict separation of federal authority vs. State authority.
Without State representation you would see even more federal overreach than we do now.
I’m super liberal, and am on board with like 90% of that agenda but abolishing the Senate just isnt it.
Hear me out, what if the Senate just did its job?
If we’re going that far, let’s go one step further and uncap the House. We put states over people with the current system, and eliminating the Senate along with uncapping the the House would allow the individual to gain more representation in the federal government.
The current winds seem to be blowing towards making states largely superfluous, anyway, with all of the rulings that seem to be allowing the federal government to trounce all over state’s rights.
Abolishing the Senate requires increasing House Representation. This is a must.

In order to get rid of the Senate, you would need a constitutional amendment that first must past 2/3 vote of House AND Senate. You think the Senate is going to vote to abolish itself?
Even if you get that far, it would have to be approved by 3/4 of the states. In the current political climate, you couldn’t get 3/4 of the states to agree that water is wet. Age limits and term limits have the same problem.
The „easiest“ reform you could do is amend the Apportionment Act of 1911, which set the number of House representatives and how they are allocated. You wouldn’t need a constitutional amendment, but there doesn’t seem like there’s been any serious push for this. Smaller states aren’t going to be keen to see their influence diminished, whether they’re red, blue or purple.
Edit: As others have pointed out, it is actually impossible to get rid of the Senate unless all 50 states agree.

I feel this way too. 18 percent of the country elects 52 Senators so Pieces of excrement like Mitch McConnell can block all progressive positive legislation, while representing 18 percent of the voting population. Soon 15 states will have 70 percent of the US population. So 30 senators for 70 percent of the population while 70 senators for 30 percent of the population in the US Senate. Meaning states like Wyoming, Alaska, and Kentucky can ruin even more lives with their 2 senators each for a population of under 3 million people.
Jacobin, seriously? Anyway because of the Suffrage Clause the Senate cannot be abolished by constitutional amendment. It would require agreement and ratification by 100% of the states.

Under the Constitution, this can’t even get done with an Amendment. It would take all 50 states to agree. The smaller ones have no incentive to do so. Tough to do without armed revolution.

Before you downvote, I’m genuinely curious because I don’t follow into things too deeply, this is not an attack on the idea.
What would this achieve in the long run? The two legislative chambers were designed to work together to get things done. Yeah it’s a broken system right now, but what would only having the House do?
There is something big that I’m missing here, but I can’t figure it out- please someone walk me through the process.
These headlines are so stupid. How? How do you abolish the Senate? The only way that happens is with a Constitutional ammendment and the ONLY way that is gonna happen is if 3/4 of the state legislatures ratify it, because that’s never gonna happen in Congress you are never going to get 2/3rds of the Senate to agree to abolish itself. And even if you COULD get an ammendment passed to abolish the Senate, you’d need to also get a unanimous conensus of every State’s legislature and that would never happen.
The entire thought experiment is an exercise is pointless stupidity.
Besides, there’s a better solution to both the gridlock in the Senate and the disappropriate representation of large states that can both legally be done. Uncap the House of Representatives (seriously the reasoning for it being capped is hilariously stupid and shortsighted) and then add Puerto Rico and Washington DC as states. Both of those solutions are actually possible to do and would solve a LOT of our representation problems.
