Mbappé finished 2026 with 10 goals (Golden Boot) for 22 all-time; Messi scored 8 for 21. Klose’s record of 16 had stood since 2014. Rodri took the Golden Ball.

Only fair to differentiate between a 32 team world cup and 48 due to the additional games and rankings of teams participating

    3. Whatever record Mbappe sets will stand for a long time, even after Fifa expands the World Cup to 64 teams

    4. Isn’t this inaccurate? The record was broken by Messi, then Mbappe broke Messi’s record.

Mbappe’s last two goals in the third place friendly match is a joke.

    6. With 64 teams next time , there will be 5+ players averaging 10 goals at the same time

    7. ‘12 years’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting, given that the World Cup is every 4 years. ‘For 2 world cups’ doesn’t sound as impressive.

Introducing a significant number of lower quality teams is going to have an impact. If there is a move to have a 64 team tournament, as suggested, this record should rise again.
