BC and Ontario have critical minerals they could leverage. It’s something they could do with Saskatchewan and Alberta this time around. Nevertheless, Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan tend to be where a lot of critical minerals are. At the very least, it could be done without the provinces opposing retaliatory measures.

I think critical minerals is a smart play. Unlike energy, it wouldn’t immediately impact/impoverish ordinary Americans, but it would have tangible economic impact for many industries. And like aluminum, we can pivot to alternative markets with reasonable speed, which isn’t currently viable for oil, and can never happen for electricity.

That said, we’d better be prepared to weather their retaliations against our retaliations. They seem genuinely shocked and offended when anyone fights back.

At this point, why even respond. When your toddler has a temper tantrum you don’t engage. It hurts. The screaming is annoying. Everyone judges you. But really what other avenue do you have with a screaming toddler? It’s even harder when you are not their parents. So in this case, at this point, perhaps Canada should just shrug and move along. The giant toddler with a toupee and bad tan is throwing another tantrum. Let’s move along and just disengage.

Be careful, other countries could fill the void and we could lose the supply to the USA for good. Unless we can find other customers immediately to take up the slack, we could be playing a dangerous game.

Don’t block, tax. If they want to have a tantrum while damaging our economy, the least we can do is charge them for it.

    6. Would be devastating to every mining town in Canada. Would turn my city blue as an example. This is cutting off our nose to spite our face.

Actually, blocking is bad but don’t sign long term supply contracts with the US. signing contracts with other purchasers countries will limit supply is smarter as it also drives up the price for the US and is just an example of the free enterprise that the Americans love
