      **Background:** 

      Previous studies suggest red and processed meat consumption may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer (PC); however, there is no consensus regarding the associations. A systematic review and meta-analysis were therefore performed to explore the relationship between red and processed meats and PC risk.

      **Methods:** 

      We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science for articles up to April 13, 2026, using random-effects models to calculate relative risks (RRs) and 95% CIs, restricted cubic splines for dose-response relationship, and subgroup/meta-regression for heterogeneity.       Sixteen articles with 1,959,527 participants and 8,856 PC cases were included. There was a 16% increased risk of PC found in the highest versus lowest red meat consumption levels (RR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.02–1.31). A linear association was observed between red (P non-linear = 0.656) and processed meats (P non-linear = 0.857) and PC risk, with **a 10% increase in the risk of PC for each additional 100 g/d of red meat consumption (RR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.00–1.21). For processed meat products, no significant association with PC risk was found.**

      **Conclusion:** 

      This finding indicates that increased red meat consumption may elevate the PC risk; therefore, daily red meat intake is recommended to be controlled. No evidence links processed meat to PC risk.“

    2. Unmeasured confounding explains the whole effect. Plus measurement of food intake is so imprecise as to be scientifically useless. As usual the first rule of nutritional epidemiology is not to trust nutritional epidemiology.

      Cool study! This adds to the mounting evidence that eating less meat and more plants is probably a good thing for our health 

    5. even if the 10% figure is correct it means 16-17 new cases per 100,000 people rather than 15 per 100,000 (2022).

      People quibbling over the study and health impact details of eating red meat, like scrutinizing ants through a magnifying glass while the environment around them goes up in flames thanks in part to the world’s over-consumption of meat and animal products.

    7. Add this to the growing body of evidence that red meats increase risk of cancer. Also, people should not misinterpret this as processed meats not increasing cancer risk, they certainly do for colorectal cancer

      As usual on Reddit most of the comments here will be unscientific dismissals of the evidence since people take this evidence as some sort of personal attack.

      I’m confused what does this line mean „No clear link was found for processed meat.“for the argument.
       That feels like a different conversation thrown in at the end.

    9. It’s still a small percentage of cases overall. Though, reducing meat consumption or at least red meat consumption probably wouldn’t hurt.

      I’ve started eating it much less myself, so when I do go out and get a big ass steak or something it’s more of an event vs eating them every damn day. (My dad did that)

      Sorry if this is a stupid question.
      So is this saying that processed red meat (I believed they were not mutually exclusive) doesn’t add additional risk to normal red meat consumption or that if it’s processed red meat then the risk disappears?

      These papers always say the same thing, they review other studies and summarise what they found. In each of these studies, the control is very poor and it never negates lifestyle choices outside of eating meat.

      It is very well documented that not eating enough fibre heavily increases the chances of cancer – vegetables and fruits are a great source of these fibres. It is also very likely that meat eaters are not getting enough fibre in their diets and probably have other worse lifestyle choices.

      Not saying meat eating isn’t associated with an increased risk, but no paper has properly studied this in my opinion.

      Just looking at the two forest plots it appears that one study (M. Di Maso 2013) is responsible for most of the result in the meta analysis.

      Worth remembering that the base pancreatic cancer risk is very very low, like 1.5% iirc. Even a 100% increase in pancreatic cancer risk (1kg of red meat a day, an extremely unrealistic amount for most people) is still a tiny overall risk. Not really worth avoiding unprocessed red meat over by itself, especially if you’re a moderate consumer.

    14. Friendly reminder that + 10% of a very low number is also a very low number.

    15. The real question is how many of the participants became obese as a result of the red meat diet. Even if all study groups have the same diet with the only difference being meat, some may be less active and gain weight.

      Obesity, based on my research, is the greatest food-related cause of non-pathogen disease and cancer.

      Does it control for the type and quality of red meat? If did this study, I would have a group eat crappy red meat like McDonald’s, etc. Then, you could compare to a control group eating grass fed beef. Not to mention, diet composition outside of red meat, alcohol consumption, and exercise. I’d wager there’s probably a big difference in health outcomes.

    17. I love steak and burgers but only have them rarely because reducing saturated fat was the key to reducing my LDL and apoB. It also gives me an excuse to always get filet mignon when I do eat steak, since it’s the lowest in saturated fat. But that’s maybe once every month or two. I generally eat chicken and fish now (I love salmon at least as much as steak, so that works out).

    18. Is „100g per day“ an average over some other period of time, or is this about extreme carnivores who eat substantial amounts of red meat every day?

    19. I wish they would have controlled for other factors. Pancreatic cancer has been known as a cancer of affluence. Rich people eat more red meat, but it’s also been highly linked to those who live near golf courses or frequent them a lotb

    20. For the Americans out there, 100g is 3.5 oz which is a pretty big increase in volume. Though this study is only tracking pancreatic cancer, and not all of the other downsides of red meat consumption like higher saturated fat content and relation to heart health, which you are significantly more lucky to suffer from.

      The overall lifetime risk of getting pancreatic cancer is roughly 1 in 56 for men and 1 in 60 for women. This is telling me that 3.5 oz or red meat/day raises my risk from 1.7% to 11.7%?

      My money would say that carcinogen needs a spark from something like starch or sugar. Most people i see that eat meat but dont touch bread or lots of rice are freakishly athletic, healthy or have even reversed auto-immune issues.

      TLDR; Eating a lot of red meat may slightly raise your risk of pancreatic cancer, but the study does not prove that red meat directly causes it. Processed meat did not show a clear link to pancreatic cancer in this analysis. The practical takeaway is to keep red meat moderate rather than panic about eating it occasionally.
