I’m glad the alarm is being sounded on this, not for 1 satellite, but for what thousands or tens of thousands of satellites could do.
Physicists considered the use of mercury in ion thrusters in the 1960s, but it was a non-starter. I don’t know if it was rejected due to toxicity or due to contamination problems, or both. A film of condensed mercury vapor is conductive. It could short out components. Inert gasses like xenon are not reactive or conductive. They have the fewest contamination problems.

The press release is from 2018. Astra bought Apollo Fusion in 2021. They are not working on mercury thrusters.

Last time I checked, Mercury had been orbiting the sun for my entire life! Thanks regulatory blind spot!

old article based on the same scare tactics that had people buying gas masks in 1910 bc of a comet. there are certainly better choices than mercury but, this tech wasn’t really a threat to the global public’s general health.
