      It has been learned that the government is considering utilizing retired Self-Defense Forces (SDF) personnel as immigration security officers who crack down on foreigners illegally staying in Japan.

      As the number of foreign residents in Japan continues to rise, the shortage of immigration security officers responsible for detecting illegal overstayers and carrying out deportation work has become severe.

      According to government sources, taking into account the possibility of unexpected incidents occurring during the deportation of illegal overstayers, the government is moving toward utilizing retired SDF personnel going forward.

      The government has also solidified a policy to increase the number of immigration security officers and examiners by more than 200 people, with Cabinet approval expected as early as the 28th.
      Of these, approximately 50 additional security officers will be concentrated in Ibaraki Prefecture, which has the highest number of illegal workers. About 180 examiners will also be added to strengthen investigations into the actual state of illegal employment.

      The number of foreign residents has set a record high for the fourth consecutive year and surpassed 4 million for the first time at the end of 2025.

      I don’t get it. It’s not like they’re dealing with people arriving on boats or illegally crossing borders like in other countries?

      Did they see that happening overseas and think it’s happening in Japan or something???

      I also think overstayers should be caught but why would this kind of militaristic response be necessary…

      A lot of the retired personnel are not well in the head, that’s why they’re retired, especially if under 40 years old, this is scary.

      Couldn’t they get some of these SDF blokes driving buses or working on building sites instead? We are actually desperate for more people to work in these areas.
