      In many ways, drivers report, owning an [EV](https://www.wired.com/tag/electric-vehicles/) is the same if not better than owning a gas-powered car. But fueling an electric vehicle is different, and can be inconvenient depending on where you live, and is therefore sometimes scary to even those [interested in buying electric](https://www.wired.com/story/electric-vehicle-market-growth-sales-slump/).

      The good news is that automakers, governments, and other policy players realize the US has a charging problem. They want more people in electric cars. 

      At WIRED, the whole situation got us interested in a thought experiment: If we could magically snap our fingers and turn every auto electric, how many charging stations would the US need to add? For every vehicle on US roads to be electric, there would need to be six times as many public chargers as there are today.

    2. You would fundamentally need to deal with people who rent in areas with street parking – their inability to charge overnight would need to be addressed.

    3. I think for every gas station pump, there should be an equal amount of charging stations x2 since it takes a bit longer to charge than to pump. I was out in la and there are so many charging stations but find a place to charge my car was still an issue in some spots.

      It depends a lot on the technology improvements. Can we get to the 5 minute 10%-100% charge? If so, we would need to replace about 75% of existing gas pumps with an electric charger. More people are living in condos and apartments who won’t have access to an overnight charger. Those will need to go the traditional fuel fill up route.

      If we can’t get to 5 minute charges and have the current 30 minute’ish chargers, we would need a lot more.

      What is also more important than numbers of chargers, is the geographic location of them.

      Here’s an easy solution: replace the fuel tanks at petrol stations with batteries and the pumps with rapid chargers. Fit slow 7-22kW AC chargers everywhere that cars might be parked for more than an hour.

      I live in the SE USA and see charging stations popping up all over. I rarely see a vehicle charging at them.
      Most people charge at home, so we should need a lot fewer charging stations than gas stations.

    7. The main problem with this article (not even a study) is that it claims we need „6x more“.

      There are many ways forward

      The real answer depends on how behaviors and expectations change over the 30 years until we have 90%+ of cars on the road electric.

      If all apartment complexes and parking structures (public, at work, malls, etc) get electrified, we will have a lot more public and semi public L2. Way more than 6x. That’s quite feasible in 30 years with some regulatory and fiscal motivation.

      But if we are stuck with the gas station model we need a lot more urban supercharging.

      Cars that are only street parked may be forced into the gas station model. Will there be widespread vandalism against street light charging? It may work in Salt Lake City, but not in San Francisco or Portland or Oakland for example.

      Charging is in its nascent stages. Different adaptors, rates, etc., are making this much more complicated than it should be. We also have a lot more battery development research to do.

      Based on what we’re we seeing in claims made by companies like Toyota, we “should” have solid state batteries that charge quickly and have ranges of 1000 miles or more. This would dramatically reduce the amount of charging infrastructure we would need. For public transportation and urban traffic, it would seem induction charging integrated into streets would be a better answer.

      We need more big box stores that have the parking to install them there. It encourages them to spend time thus money in the store so it’s win win. It’s not nearly as complicated as installing flammable liquid reservoirs and refilling them

    10. depends. you can’t go as far on a charge as a tank of gas, some people think they need to charge to 100%, the last 10% can take hours. I can fill a gas tank in under 5 minutes, but to charge a car to 80% can take 30-40 minutes.

      I’m thinking a lot more charging stations. And people need to not charge to 100%, and move as soon as done.

    11. you would first need to have an ev car thats worth the purchase. i get 610 mile range with my hybrid car. $50 a month for gas. let me know when that happens. current ev cars are useless and a waste of money.

      There are close to 300 million registered vehicles in America. 42% of households could theoretically change from home. Let’s assume this could be boosted to 50% relatively easily. 300 million cars vs the 1.2 million without a home charging option, assuming we currently have enough charging stations, 61,000 now, even if inconvenient for many the lower figure would be over 15 million vs about 150 thousand gas stations.

      Here is the current reason so many more charges are needed

      • Level 1 Charging: 600 times longer than filling a gas vehicle.
      • Level 2 Charging: 120 times longer than filling a gas vehicle.
      • DC Fast Charging: 9 times longer than filling a gas vehicle.

      Obviously getting more DC fast changing would lower this ratio.

      Edit: Oops originally off by a factor of two, not 150 vs 1.2, 300 vs 1.2 so 15 million (sucks not to own a single family home)

      Addendum: while this may seem unachievable it is fairly easy to add changing stations to public parking areas. Fast changing stations will likely be supported by an in charging station batteries that allows stations to charge continuously and then charge cars faster without having to get power lines upgraded which might be a huge bottleneck in some cases.

    13. Not really a good comparison as you cannot fill up your gas powered car at home. So you don’t need as many charging stations in areas where a majority of homeowners can charge their EVs at home.

      My local grocery store has 4 charging spots for customers to use (for free I believe) while they shop.

      I’ve never seen an EV parked/charging in one of those spots.

      But I have seen regular gas vehicles parked in those spots.

      Frankly, we need a new battery technology first that will allow batteries to either hold a much bigger charge with the same weight or can be charged much, much faster without degrading. Then, based on that, you need to figure out the amount of charging stations since they will depend majorly on what battery technology we are mostly operating. If you take that we get batteries(capasitors?) that charge from 0 to 100 in 5 minutes then we will potentially need the same amount of charging stations as there are gas stations, since it takes about the same time to fill in a tank of gas.

      Until charging times are somewhat equivalent to the quickness of filling up with gas it’ll take a bit of time. Nothing major but as more people transition to EVs the stations will have to be larger to accommodate 20-30 min charge times per car.

      Either none, or one per car, depending on how you look at it.

      You don’t use an EV same way you do an ICE, you don’t visit a charging spot to top up other than in some sort of an emergency. Your normal overnight parking spot is where you charge, you always start a day with a full battery, same as with your phone, there is no charging station in your itenary.

    18. You’d have to entirely overhaul the energy grid before you could even consider implementing electrical cars, at that scale. Some of our more ‘utopia’ states begged people to adopt electrical and the beg them not to charge their cars at certain times because their grids can’t handle it

      That’s very much a „how long is a piece of string“ type of question because the energy density of a kilogram of battery and a kilogram of fuel is just way different and each gas station carries different kinds of fuel.

      Also because each car charges at different rates.

      Really. I love EVs but I think we should acknowledge just how immature this tech is still. Your average EV is closer to a highway capable golf cart than a car.

    20. One of the questions for apartment complexes, who foots the bill? Assuming it’s an apartment complex where it’s just a parking lot and not covered parking/garages the landlord will likely be on the hook for getting charging stations installed but then does the cost get added onto someone’s rent based on usage? Do you make it a set amount similar to places that cover some utilities? Do you allow for charging of visitor’s vehicles/how do you keep people who don’t live there from freeloading off your stations? Do you make the charging stations pay as you go, meaning your residents can park in the spot, pay for charging, but then need to move their car after it’s done?

      It’s easy to implement for new builds because it can all be planned and mapped out prior to construction but for existing complexes, there’s a lot of problems that have to be solved with various costs that landlords may not view as worth the extra hassle/expenses in the short term.

      The issue for me is that these fast chargers are twice the price of charging at home. So if you can’t charge at home or at a cheap place at work, then a gas car is the same, if not cheaper.

      Norwegian here.

      In this discussion it may be interesting to see how Norway has done it. The reason is that currently, over 90 % of new car sales are BEV’s, fully electric vehicles, and we are approaching 50 % of cars on the road being fully electric. So, we’ve been through that process for the most part.

      Interestingly, it seems that the ideal number of public charging points is around 250 – 300 per 100 000 people. Norway currently has 315 per 100 000 and the numbers are still going up. However, this eliminates range anxiety in Norway.

      Also, the current impact on the electricity grid is around 1.5 % – so even with 100 % EV’s on the road, the total will be well under 3 % as new EV’s are significantly more efficient than older ones. The impact on the electricity grid is so far characterised as negligible, since most EV charging happens overnight when the grid is less strained than during the daytime.

      For the USA to reach the same level of available chargers, you need roughly ten times as many public chargers as are available today, meaning a total of around 1 million. Also, the main cost of erecting public chargers aren’t the cost of the chargers themselves, but in getting sufficient electrical power to that charger. This is why the Norwegian government in years past has subsidised that heavily, since it is a key success factor in the transition to EV’s.
