      The issues they discuss in the article are not specific to data centers. They apply to any satellite. But they gotta get the clicks so they frame it to match the current buzzwords.

      So would they be catastrophic, or are the effects unknown?

      A reasonable course of action would be asking for some kind of recovery/landing mechanisms rather than a pause for approvals.

    6. In the article they mention soot as being a problem, but soot wouldn’t be a thing with Methalox rockets that both Blue Origin and Spacex will be using to launch datacenters with?

      Aluminum oxides sure, they aren’t great but it’s not that starship will have an expendable 2nd stage that burns up compared to traditional rockets

      Anywhere from 40 to 100 tons of space material like dust and meteoroids burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere every single day. The effects of space launch and satellite atmospheric decommission are miniscule by comparison.

      This article is all over the place and nonsensical. Most of the way through the article it mentions light pollution.

      These satellites would have 0 impact on light pollution so why is that relevant to bring up when discussing this?

      Because it’s fearmongering.

      But yes, light pollution IS actually a real problem. Make a petition for that instead.

    11. I feel like the conversations by Billionaires about Space Datacenters, is the ultimate highlight of the complete unawareness and stupidity that the richest people in the world exhibit.

      On an actual, practical level. Datacenters in space, is a dumb idea. You can think about it for less than 5 minutes, and you’ll realise it’s dunb.
      You can’t cool them, you can’t maintain them, they’re incredibly expensive in every involved step, and yet, here we are.

      So these idiots are either surrounded by *other* idiots and yes men, who either don’t know or refuse to tell them that the whole concept is stupid.

      Or they just insulate themselves from any dissenting voices, and instead make these declarations without a care for practical reality.

      I worry how corrosive it is for young people especially, when they look at the news and realise that the richest and most powerful people in the world are dumb as posts.

      Experts is such a trite and misleading word used so much this days. It’s always experts say why water is good, experts say why water is bad.

      How about just instead of posting a link to a click bait article you at least give a summary of the information in it.

      Question one, who is the so called experts?

      Question two, what exactly are the so called space data centers?

      Question three, why this so called space data center ‚catastrophic‘ for the Planet?

      From the headline alone I can imply that this is just slop meant to drive engagement because Musk/Bezos bad, Space Data Center eery and including the word ‚Catastrophic‘ is super duper scary. It’s pure emotional slop.

      The amount of inconceivable push for something as idiotic as this makes me think that they want to store their data outside of any possible courts of law or jurisdictional reach.

      So….it’s probably all for child porn that they don’t want to give up.

      I was a bit confused at first as to how it was bad. It’s getting them up there and it falling down that’s bad.

    23. No one will ever build a datacenter in space. It is impractical and not cost effective. 

      Data centers generate enormous amounts of heat. Space is “cold” but it is extremely difficult to get rid of heat because it is a vacuum and there are almost no molecules to transfer the heat to. 

      It’s like trying to build a solar farm in Alaska. The main resource you need just isn’t there so it doesn’t make sense. For data centers they need electricity, an internet network, and the ability to get rid of heat. All of that is much more difficult and less reliable in space.
