Trump said the US will approve a civilian nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia only if Saudi Arabia normalizes relations with Israel and joins the Abraham Accords.
The program would be for peaceful energy use only. Saudi Arabia would not be allowed to enrich uranium or develop military nuclear facilities.
The deal is part of wider talks involving US security guarantees, economic cooperation and Saudi demands related to the Palestinians. Israel has worried that a Saudi nuclear program could start a regional arms race, but Trump says uranium enrichment will not be included.
Such a move will likely push the Saudis to get their nuclear energy technology from China or Russia.
Russia has the opportunity to do something remarkable here …
The strategic logic here is messier than the White House is letting on. Conditioning civilian nuclear cooperation on Abraham Accords membership assumes Riyadh sees American technology as irreplaceable, when the Saudis have already made it clear they will talk to Beijing and Moscow if Washington draws red lines on enrichment. That bargaining chip weakens the moment MBS can credibly point to a Chinese-built reactor as a fallback.
There is also the gap between „no enrichment“ as a US demand and what Saudi Arabia considers a sovereign right under any NPT framework it might sign. Publicly accepting a no-enrichment ceiling at home would be politically difficult for the crown prince, especially given how the deal is being framed in the region as transactional rather than principled. Israel gets its preferred outcome, but the long-term incentive structure for nonproliferation arguably gets worse, not better. Pushing a major Gulf state toward Chinese or Russian nuclear vendors does not exactly strengthen the nonproliferation regime.

No arab leader wants to end up like Sadat of Egypt (who was killed in 1981) or The late king of Jordan (who was killed in 1951) or Gemeyal of Lebanon (who was killed in 1982) for making peace with Israel before the Palestinan issue is resolved.
President Trump has tried time and time again, so did Joe Biden to push Saudi-Israeli normalization it didnt happen then and I doubt it happens now.
As long as MBS fatherthe actual King is alive still peace happening between Saudi Arabia and Israel is near zero the King is very much more conservative than his son MBS. The King takes a harderline approach that isnt very flexible regarding the 1981 king fahd plan and 2002 arab peace inatative very passionate about the Muslim claims to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and very passionate about the Palestinan cause regarding East Jerusalem as it capital and the return of refugees to their homes. As long as the King alive I doubt we get a deal.
