Back in the ’90s and early 2000s optical interferometry was all the rage with a considerable amount of hope that it could be used for detecting and even imaging Earth-like exoplanets. Missions like SIM, Darwin, and TPF (the Terrestrial Planet Finder) were proposed. But it turned out it was harder to make work than people thought, so those mission plans have been left shelved and unfunded. It’s cool to see researchers are still chipping away at the problem though.
