In January 2025, the Trump Administration announced a 90-day freeze on all United States Government (USG) foreign aid, which subsequently became a permanent shutdown of USAID in July 2025. New research finds that the abrupt cessation of foreign aid disrupted health and humanitarian systems worldwide, with disproportionate impacts on women, girls, and other marginalized populations.
Researchers from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health collaborated with partners to document these negative impacts. The findings appear in the journal [*BMJ Public Health*](https://bmjpublichealth.bmj.com/content/4/3/e004904)*.*
The researchers examined the impacts of the funding freeze during its early months. They conducted 53 interviews with NGO leaders, clinicians, community health workers, government officials, and humanitarian actors in Nepal, Kenya, and Colombia. Interviewees were selected based on their direct or indirect involvement in U.S. government-funded health programs. Ninety-eight global health practitioners also completed an online survey.
The study revealed immediate disruptions across sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), HIV service interruptions and treatment access, the collapse of referral networks and service ecosystems, a mental health crisis among clients and health workers, and the rising vulnerability of marginalized populations—notably, LGBTQ+ populations, sex workers, people living with HIV, and migrants. Both survey and interview data highlighted growing inequities and anticipated reversals in longstanding health gains.

So you say the policy changes did exactly what the US republican administration wanted it to do.
So, other countries built health and humanitarian systems partially dependent on US funding?
In other words, aid was thought of as an expected, recurring and long-term part of core state systems instead of a freely given charity for emergency purposes or specific, short – term needs.
Yes we know, we knew when it happened.
hey, exactly the groups republican voters hate!
Trump hates people of color.
… just goes to show how much blood sucking there was, and still biting the hand that fed them. No more.
I’m confused. Is this saying that it affects people outside of the US when the US shuts off foreign aid?
And once again, this was all by design.
Then they ask for 500 billion dollar raise for bomb and war. Sickening
Not to mention impacts on Americans like the screwworm, and the risk to Americans as safeguards are not as functional to prevent global epidemics.
He hates those groups the most, so this tracks
Maybe those countries should invest more in themselves?
This is good news to the pedo class (i.e. Trump and cronies). They love hurting people (especially women and children), it’s one of the few things they are good at.
I dont blame Trump, I blame everyone that voted for him, especially if they had a direct interest / career affected by those cuts.
he said what he was going to do.
whats next?
So it worked just as Trump and the Republicans intended.
But Israel needed the money more.
Yes, that’s was who the aid was supposed to be going to in the first place. The aid was removed, the people who were benefiting from the aid being removed are now the most affected. It’s terrible that happened but this is like the most obvious conclusion.
That was the point (along with killing the investigation into musk). They believe that empathy is a problem and have acted accordingly. More brown people, particularly women, are dying ? That’s a bonus when you’re a racist who hates women.
Actions totally fitting for the party that claims to be „pro-life“ and all about „Christian values“
And you’ll notice a massive rise in authoritarianism in many places
“Disproportionate impacts on women, girls, and marginalized people”, hey, good news that’s quite a lot of the people the GOP hate.
– Epidemiologists from Boston University estimate that the sudden halt of USAID supply chains has already resulted in the deaths of over 500,000 children globally, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa
– The immediate 83% cut to USAID-funded humanitarian aid shuttered clinics, leaving 400,000 children in Syria at extreme risk of severe malnutrition
– Recent data from July 2026 indicates a 14% drop in U.S.-supported HIV treatments, leaving roughly 77,000 fewer children with lifesaving PEPFAR services.
– A study published in The Lancet warned that the elimination of these programs could lead to 4.5 million child deaths by 2030 due to spikes in preventable illnesses like pneumonia, malaria, and diarrhea
I still can’t convince my friends on Fb that 1 thing they super duper cared about in 2024, although important, was not the only thing at stake.
I mean while I understand the loss of humanitarian aid is a hard call. You can’t expect a country to foot the majority of the bill in perpetuity. I mean looking at the numbers, the US contributed approximately the same as the next 4 countries combined before it was decreased. Along with other countries decreasing their aid as well that same year.
Now I don’t align with any political party, I’m just looking at the numbers.
We can spend all the money in the world killing and maiming but God forbid we help anyone.
Defending an organization that is literally a CIA front is a bit wild, but they did manage to do some good along the way I suppose.
It is a bit odd that the workable solution to these problems is just „America pays for everything“.
I’m pretty sure what the research found was exactly the point of shutting down USAID in the first place.
Not our country, not our problem.
This doesn’t get much press but it might be the worst, most cruel thing he’s done
In unrelated news, China expands its Soft Power in the world.
On purpose. They know how their policies will hurt people and that is the point
Yet this country continues to fund Israel, its sickening
Okay serious question, people saw this coming when Trump was elected in 2024. Why were no contingency plans then made by other powers in Europe and Asia to pick up the slack??? Half of these countries were former colonies ffs.
Too bad we keep giving money to Israel. They are the ones that need cut off. But of course the blackmail they got of pedo in chief isn’t going to allow that
Why are women disproportionately benefitting from US foreign aid previously?
Where did all of it go? The money, medicine and food? Because it didn’t go back to the US citizens. Nothing changed, except the suffering.
That’s a feature not a bug for these fascists
Finally a W for us white men! About time!
Just as planned – to harm the weakest.
I disagree with a lot of things Trump has done, but we should focus on the sad state of America before we start throwing out money to other nations (especially Isreal). That being said, the amount of corruption in our political system practically guarantees domestic spending basically only enriches the upper class.
You don’t think they really care, do you?
