Hello r/Denmark, I saw (and even tasted — I was curious about the salinity !!) the Baltic Sea for the first time in your country and since you have a claim at the table of the big Baltic family, I thought I’d share my map here.
So, it’s just a hobby project that went too far and ended up being a 40×50 cm map of the Baltic sea, borrowing its warm and deep hues from the amber, the most famous export of the region, a luxury that made the region rich and famous.
This mineral-like substance formed millions of years ago from tree resin and it is today extracted on the shores of the baltic, making the two deep intertwined, geographically and historically.
(I have become a bit obsessed by amber along my travel in the area. you may feel that way reading this, and you’re right)
On the other hand, a rich blue gradient shows in great detail the bathymetry of the Baltic Sea, from the very shallow and frigid waters of the Gulf of Finland that freeze every winter, to the deep areas of the central area, off Gotland and the sandy shores of the lagoons found along Poland or Kaliningrad.
Traditionnal embroidery patterns from Lithuania featured on the map also echo another facet of the rich culture of the region, by paying tribute to this ancient and important craftmanship.
I’ll be in Abisko, Lulea and Stockholm in the coming days, I’d be delighted to meet you if you’re from the area and want to talk geography, outdoors stuff, maps or just drink beers 🙂

How long time did u spend measuring up the fjords in Norway?
Good stuff. Enjoy your trip! But for Denmark you seem to have fused Lolland and Falster together.
Again, I love the (art)work. As a geographer I really like the geographic-centred approach.
One idea: for a sea-centred map, I’d expect a few more hydronyms (toponyns for bodies of water). Not to the level of a nautical chart of course, but a few more 🙂

Nobody wants to to look at a swedish map.
Please never write Ålborg, it’s Aalborg and it means a lot to the people from there, as silly as that might seem.
I just want to be a French cartographer travelling all the way along the Baltic Sea, is that really too much to ask 🙁
Beautiful work ❤️ I noticed in Denmark that Aarhus is spelled with Aa and Ålborg with Å. Both are correct, but conventionally one method is chosen (either Aa for both or Å for both). Aa is more common today, if it matters
If the regions in Norway and Sweden are in their native language, why not Denmark too?
Jylland, Fyn, Sjælland…
And a spelling mistake:
It’s Zealand, not Seeland.
Then some nitpicks:
Aalborg, not Ålborg
(although, it is also technically correct to spell it with Å, it is also technically wrong, since us native Aalborgers don’t want that spelling.)
But why…?? You don’t think the official maps are good enough or what…?
All I see is existing maps, but colored yellow-brown’ish?
How did you make it? I am QGIS user and know people make amazing stuff in that program.
Ah yes, very nice. Most of Swedens vassal territories are included.
Aalborg is spelt wrong. Sorry, but as a native Aalborgenser it really grind my gears 🫠.
