    1. FWIW brute forcing maths problems with guidance is what I would consider, as someone who hates what „AI“ is doing to society writ large, an ideal use case for these systems.

I’m sure *someone* is having an AI work on all sorts of them

This is what AI is supposed to be used for—explore, pioneer, and understand the world around us. Not what most of us are using it for. If one day we are going to explore the depth of our oceans and the the outer space, it will be with highly intelligent robots and crafts. And for that purposes, we don’t need 11,000 data centers.

    3. To be fair, this is exactly what we *want* this technology for. We’ve been trying to automate away the stupid parts of math we don’t like doing since the abacus.

Mathematicians should be spending their time coming up with new problems to solve, not trying to find incomprehensibly long polynomials that counter theorems.

Yeah, but we did our work with 20 watts of self produced power and a device the size of a human brain (because it ummm…was a human brain).

    5. Sheesh, you animals, you couldn’t post an archive link -> [https://archive.is/PN3HF](https://archive.is/PN3HF)

      Other small point.

In order for the AI to work on this problem, I’m going to assume that Mr Alpöge spent scads of time working with claude just to set up the problem properly. And then probably scads of time going through all the iterations of crap until he found gold.

Or in order words one of the main reasons this was even possible is because claude was wrapped with an expert (Mr. Alpöge) who could separate the shit from the shinoala.

    6. Use the tools but dont evangelize them and keep firing the morons that abuse it

The AIs, when finding novel proofs or counterexamples for or against old conjectures, are rapid, but this is mathematics, so their contributions are in fact settling things (not unsettling them).

Its still impressive that the math people could understand prove that the ai got it right

    9. This is proper usage of AI

This and finding medicines and screening for problems in people so they can get things treated while there is still time

    10. I trained an AI model to know everything about my wife’s interests and then slapped a huge hog on it and now I’m divorced. AI is dangerous. Don’t let it sleep with your wife.

What I’m interested in is does cracking these uniquely difficult math problems have any benefits for humanity? Like that gene thing I heard about that’s fucking awesome but I swear that’s the only one I’ve heard about. Feels strange that if they’re advanced to enough make a gene sequencing breakthrough it that it’s weird that there’s only been one I’ve heard about. Feels like we should have had a slew of scientific breakthroughs

This is something that was augmenting a mathematician’s knowledge, experience, and direct inputs into it. Not just anyone could have gotten it to do this, let alone actually solve it. And, more importantly, he knows enough to fact check the final result.

To me this is more how this stuff is supposed to be used. It’s never going away, but I think overtime it can be re-focused on this and less on disinformation and goofiness.

    13. The point made at the end is a bit short sighted. These systems aren’t built to generate new ideas, they are built to answer existing ones. You’d build a question generating machine much differently as it’s a completely different skill.

I bet that as always the solution was made by a person augmented by an AI tool not by an independent AI intelligence that ran autonomously for a long time off a single prompt to solve a problem.
