When I look at my friends who live with their parents and how differently the men and women are treated, this makes sooo much sense.

Great visualization, but this is r/dataisbeautiful, so I have to ask…

Is there a version where this is correlated with the number of car tyres changed between 2009 and 2012, normalized by lunar phase, then cross-referenced with academic papers submitted by each country’s scientists at age six, filtered to only those who eat more than three Big Macs per week?

In Denmark—and I assume this applies to the rest of the Nordics, too—it is basically expected of you to move out of your parents home when you begin higher/post-secondary education. It helps that the government provides financial benefits for said students to cover living expenses.

    4. That’s a huge difference, wow. Some completely baseless theories:
      1) Straight women are more likely to date older men than vice versa.
      2) Women are on average are more sociable and are more willing to house share
      3) The education attainment gap is finally starting to be reflected in wider society. Average wages for young people who actually work don’t favour women, but male youth unemployment is much higher (at least in the UK)

    5. Gender roles working hard here and very very differently in different cultures.

It would be good to cross reference this with jobless/not studying data for same age groups.

I feel that many cases young people underuse the staying home opportunity to save money(for own place) and leave home into a tough financial life. The other extreme is just not getting motivated to leave home from the „comfortable“ life.

There is a balance to everything.

    6. The article completely disregards homes that are multi generational by design.

The autors‘ assumption appears to be that a normally functioning adult will move out of their parental home in their early twenties. And that failure to do so either points to spessure on the housing market or a failure to adult.

We honestly need to normalize multi-generational households in the West.

For those with parents that are healthy and financially stable enough it can massively help with the stress of caring for children, it can cut down on financial stress, it can create more emotional support networks.

Sure it wouldn’t be for everyone and everyone’s situation is different, but I feel like in this day and age where we’re becoming increasingly atomized in a world that’s increasingly stressful and complicated having another set of hands can take a lot of the load off.

    8. Still living with your parents at 25 is VERY different from living with your parents at 34.

What the fuck is up with Albanian men aged 25-34? Do they grow an umbilical cord or something?

Irish housing market is just completely insane at the moment – I’d guess it’ll take a decade for the supply to catch up with the demand, unless there’s a drastic downturn in the economy. There’s literally no where to move out to. It’s not even a cost thing in a lot of cases you won’t even be considered for rental as there’s so much competition for housing- and you can almost certainly expect to have to share a house.

It wasn’t as extreme as this historically, and even though we’re building way faster than the EU average rate we’re not even treading water. It’s becoming a huge political issue.

I remember the 30y old Italian man stereotype. A bit broader now.

      theories:
      – men have more mental health problems and need more support
      – there are more male underachiever then female
      – it is more convenient for men to live at Home then for women

    13. austin101123 on

I’m guessing this does not include living with partner’s parents? I wonder if women are more likely to live with their bf at his parent’s house. Could also be 25-34yo women living with an older male partner.

The Balkans specifically, I’d be interested in why so many men live with their parents and then about half of women do.

    14. Public-Chocolate-399 on

I think in Balkans it can be little misleading. I live on my own from the age of 25 but im still registered at my family home in the same town because it’s easier not to change ID adress every time I switch apartments. But in the eyes of statistics I still live with my parents.

Wow the difference in Albania blows my mind.
Is there some expectation for women to move in to husband’s family home after getting married or something? Any Albanians here? 😅

I’m Polish living in Spain, and I always had the impression that polish people leave homes early and it’s way more popular in Spain to stay with parents until you can buy a flat.
Turns out it’s just my bias, because these two countries have very similar %

    17. But but, we did not have have 100 genders? You might as well drop the bullshit, and say sex.

    18. PrincessJoyHope on

How many of these women not living with their parents are living with their partner’s parents?

    19. As a Scandinavian I am confused as to how you manage to take a higher/post high school education if you stay with your parents? In my country most young people have to move away to start education because the schools are in the few bigger cities. And yes I know – education is free and living costs subsidised etc. But it’s not my impression that the post high school education percentage is significantly higher in Northern Europe than elsewhere in Europe.

    20. a correlation between immigrants (Muslim if you want to be specific but probably doesn’t matter if you specify) and if their children/parents also emigrated with them would be helpful information included in this data set

Do Albanians just have a multi-generational system where married men stay at their parents house or something?

    22. TRichard3814 on

Wtf is going on in Albania

94% of males 25-34 living with parents!!!

And 37% females, I wonder what explains massive discrepancy

    23. Best-Butterscotch424 on

This makes sense because in the younger generation women go to university more, they have higher income and more job prospects than younger men, they move with their older boyfriends and also everyone wants to rent apartments and bedrooms only to women.
