    1. **Narcissists are actually less likely to endorse left-wing authoritarianism, study finds**

New research published in the journal [*Current Psychology*](https://doi.org/10.1007/s12144-026-09655-9) suggests that narcissistic personality traits are actually linked to lower levels of left-wing authoritarianism. The findings contradict previous claims that individuals with dark personalities are widely drawn to left-wing activism simply to feed their own egos. The study provides evidence that the relationship between progressive political aggression and dark personality traits is highly complex, requiring advanced statistical techniques to fully understand.

    2. What I wonder about politics-involved narcissists, how much do they care about the platform?
I am speculating here, but wouldn’t they be deeply opportunistic?
They’d pursue any position that can bring them clout.
I’d argue that left-wing organizations would have more filters against opportunists than right-wing ones, but no organization is perfect and things slip through.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard the initial claims of a correlation between narcissism and left-wing authoritarianism. My personal observations have always witnessed narcissistic actions from conservative and ultra-conservative groups, often supporting the subjectation of minority groups and expanding the powers of strong-man leadership.

    4. Those are two very different claims… self-aggrandizement by claiming to staunchly support noble causes has no particular attachment to auth-left viewpoints specifically.

      Good, solid scientific study…
is hard to find around here.

What is „left wing authoritarianism“? And who proposed the idea this study rejects? Is this a line of research where previous studies have shown left wing activism is pursued to feed egos?

This one small study proves what I want to believe and also I didn’t read the whole article is what this is bait for.

I notice thus far not a single person going on about narcissists has mentioned this same study found higher than average psychopathy on the left at this level because opportunity is opportunity.

This study is based on a survey of 375 people in the US. It seems to use its own definition for authoritarianism unless I’m mistaken. I thought authoritarianism had to do with concentration of power in an individual or small group, but this is describing it as rigid enforcement of social values. Is this a definition I’m simply not aware of?

There is no “left wing authoritarianism” except in China and Nort Korea and even that is in name only

    9. Oh, thank goodness. I was worried that my left-wing authoritarianism was being contaminated by icky narcissists. Can’t have that!

    10. Giant grain of salt. Pretty sure Stalin and Mao were narcissists, and pretty sure all those hammer and sickle ava edgelords yelling “luigi intensifies” clearly have issues to work through.

Narcissists favour whoever will win; whether in favour of bias or predilection.

If it benefits them, that’s how they’ll vote. The more narcissistic and corrupt the candidate is in their favour, they’ll happily vote for it.

This appears to be dog water PoliSci. Post should probably be removed entirely.

    13. Narcissistic people dont love other Narcissistic people.

      They’re competition.

Trumps brand of Narcissistic behavior isnt going to mesh with all Narcissistic people. So they arent going to agree with hin because thatd be disagreeing with their own world view, which is the best and the most accurate

    14. It is worth remembering that narcissism exists in „covert“ or „vulnerable“ forms. Grandstanding isn’t the only indication of a narcissistic personality – covert narcissists have just as big an ego, but outwardly project victimhood, and this form tends to actually be the more damaging, because it’s a lot harder for people to detect (especially since most people equate narcissism with its grandiose form only), and the damage it does to its victims generally weakens them to other forms of narcissistic abuse, and turns everyone else against the victim.

To put it simply, don’t make the mistake of always correlating „big ego“ with „narcissism“, because some of the biggest personalities are actually hiding an insecurity (a common thing in comedians, for example), and using the outward projection of confidence as a veil… while some people who claim to be humble/timid/vulnerable are actually massive narcissists.

    15. I think this is going to very much be a function of existing power structures, and there are no left wing authoritarian power structures in the US, at least. Even the stuff that right wing nut jobs call left wing authoritarianism is all abstract social control, not the kind of thing that an individual has any access to or ability to take advantage of.

Narcissists will be attracted to that which feeds their narcissism. If it’s political, it’ll be the right wing, since that’s where they can actually take advantage of individual attention for individual power.

But if things were to shift and any actual political power started gathering around left wing authoritarianism, the narcissists would follow.

    16. Isnt this common sense logic, narcissists tend to have less empathy than non narcissists. People with little empathy are far more likely to be right wing than left.
