Data sources: national vehicle-tax schedules for all 36 countries, EU Weekly Oil Bulletin + GlobalPetrolPrices (fuel), national insurer-association statistics (premiums), ECB mid-2026 FX rates. Assumptions: identical EUR 30,000 pre-tax petrol compact, 15,000 km/year, 5 years – taxes + fuel + insurance only (purchase price, depreciation and maintenance excluded). Tools: Python (pandas + matplotlib). Full methodology, per-country breakdown and a free CSV are in the linked article. Happy to answer questions about any country’s numbers.

    2. Shouldn’t Singapore be included in the plot somehow even though it’s an outlier.

In Japan you didn’t account for the fact that all expressways and highways have tolls that are 5-10x more expensive than other countries

It would be nice to see a version without the taxes on purchase included. Most of us in Europe see that as part of the price of a new car rather than something added on. And if you buy the car used of course they aren’t a factor, though they DO affect the market prices by raising the starting point.

    5. The cost to drive 100km in an EV chart is misleading, at least for the UK datapoint.

It lists the electricity price as around $0.40/kWh, but in reality, most EV owners are on “smart” tariffs that reduces overnight home charging costs to below £0.10/kWh.

Ignoring the cost of an EV, actually running one is incredibly cheap as long as you can charge at home.
