Second capitals are useless. A big city is gonna be big, whatever. When is she gonna fix the bigger problems?
How about another go to travel campaign that focuses on lesser known gems so locals can inject some happiness into the countryside? And actually get to travel without dealing with tourist prices?
I dislike that person as much as anyone with a few brain cells to rub together, but anything that forces decentralization away from Tokyo is not necessarily a bad thing.
Does this mean that companies will be raising wages at all?
What would it even accomplish besides giving a new label to Osaka?
I’ve heard Osaka described as the second city in Japan for a very long time, I don’t see how legislating that changes anything? Am I missing something?
Why the fuck does this new coalition partner care? Is there really regionalism in Osaka of all places?
I mean I get if it was Sapporo or Fukuoka but Osaka seems like it shouldnt care about figurehead status like that at all. They shouldn’t care about the (minimal) extra tourism or jobs it may bring as they got plenty of both.
The only good thing that might come out of this is more political will to invest in the shinkansen extensions (nagoya-osaka 2, tsuruga-kyoto-osala)
Decentralizing Tokyo is not a bad thing, but Kawasaki (especially Yokohama) fits the bill better.
If they really want to have a second capital, it better be somewhere that is not in range or Mt. Fuji’s eruption.
Otherwise the mountain is only going to score a double kill when it erupts.
Besides, other than Tokyo, probably only Kyoto makes sense as a capital for Japan.

It’s the same JIP that forced a 7-month review of the Hokuriku Shinkansen route when everyone knew they were going to choose the Obama-Kyoto alignment anyway.
A weak LDP means it has to form a coalition with a reactionary party whose demands aren’t always reasonable.
It’s stupid to move it there. This is about protecting government functions incase of a natural disaster. Osaka faces many of the same issues. A major fault line runs through the city center and it also has to contend with the Nankai trough just off the coast.
It should be Fukuoka or Sapporo as neither are on the Pacific coast so tsunami are not an issue. Fukuoka port city and logistics hub. Sapporo had the benefit of land locked.
You’d think if they actuallye needed a second capital they’d pick the city named capital city (京都)
I guess if she is distracting herself with this, we should be grateful that she isn’t attacking immigrants.
