I mean that’s a very restrained statement and I would have liked to see a more unequivocal condemnation but I understand why that’s not a great idea. We did see how well that went with Trudeau.
Trump and his cronies are stereotypical snake oil salespeople & con-artist grifters just like most „leaders“ in that reactionary/regressive sphere.
The amount of damage that sphere is doing to the world on a host of fronts is still astonishing.
I can’t wait for this chapter to end. Hopefully the U.S. November General Elections send a big message and hopefully in 2028 the nail in the coffin is done.
I have my own problems with the Democratic Party/DNC but this nightmare is a whole different level dystopian.
Time for Carney to actually get his elbows up. Call his bluff. Go over his head and talk to Congress and tell them that they need to reign in their monkey or Canada will hand in our 6 month mandatory notice to withdraw from CUSMA. Tell the Americans that Canada is f-ing done and that we’d rather have no deal than a bad deal. If they want our energy, potash, fish, critical minerals, uranium, etc, then they can get in line and pay a premium.

That’s the best line in there. Fine statement given the circumstances, IMO.
So Carney wants to renegotiate.
I understand the thought process here, but offering anything at all will be seen as weakness and they will just come back for more if they see they can bully us. It’s clear to me this threat is just a shakedown and what is even the point in signing anything with someone who doesn’t honour their word?
This is amazing for carney and the liberals more posturing about sovereignty and diversion away from the USA lol to get everyone loving Canada and scared for their country. How aren’t the conservatives the ones doing the nationalism ?
Surprise, surprise, a tepid non-statement that does nothing to stand up for Canada. I know he can’t just whip out retaliations now when we’re hoping for TACO (though I fear we’ll once again make free concessions for it), but he should be doing more than this.
This is a pretty weak response.
I don’t know what the alternative would be but I don’t think the Carney strategy is working.
I think ignoring it and waiting for the inevitable walk-back is a valid move personally. This is such a stupid threat to make.
Edit: That’s not to say they shouldn’t have some retaliation planned if the threats actually materialize though, there just doesn’t seem to be much to gain from announcing them right now in my opinion.
Well at least out all this I learned something new:
In standard English grammar, a sentence never ends with two periods, even if the last word is an abbreviation (like „U.S.“) that already contains a period. The period inside the abbreviation pulls double duty to also mark the end of the sentence.
Trump is, once again, showing to the whole world that the United States is led by a very unintelligent human being that is easily manipulated by anyone in his entourage or by any type of (mis)(dis)information.
At this point, we better off focusing our energy and money elsewhere since any attempt to „appease“ that pale excuse of a world leader will be wasted as soon as he wakes up and watch Fox News.
Would it make sense to start restricting potash, energy and other items that are in critical need in the U.S.? I know that in doing so, without finding a reliable buyer for things like potash etc would hurt Canada and that isn’t the intention, but they arent feeling the sting.
We concede to pressure on the bridge and other demands and what do we get?
Threats and attacks on our sovereignty in response to wildfires. Climate change denial and weaponized American ignorance and rage sowing more casus belli seeds.
And now massive tariffs.
Do not give a single other concession. Zero concessions until a signed comprehensive agreement. And even then they’ll still probably break the agreement.
Carny is a chess master. „…Canada will work relentlessly and take any measures necessary to build our strength at home and to support Canadian workers, farmers, businesses, and families.“
Saying nothing in this statement other than willing to continue to negotiate will work just fine. Canada comes to the table to negotiate for weeks/months, while agreeing to nothing. This is the ‚relentless‘ part. Meanwhile, Trump gets to crow that he forced negotiations and so lifts the tariffs (again). Trump is such a clown he has no idea he’s being massaged, humoured, ridiculed.
Meanwhile, Canada keeps on forging new trade agreements with other countries. Before long, US won’t have any leverage because all or most of Canada’s products are exported elsewhere. It takes time to build these new trade relationships and distracting Trump with endless negotiations helps this.
Maybe there’ll be something left to negotiate or export after Trump is out of office, but don’t count on it. Canada’s eyes were finally opened to the risk of depending on a ‚good neighbour‘ and never again will we be so reliant on US.
We are in big trouble as long as Trump and his way of leading the US economy is at odds with the rest of the world.
There’s not much that we can do other than what Liberals have promised and that is for Canada has to give up its reliance on US and build new agreements and economic ties.
We keep voting Liberals but they’re all words, far from the promises that were made (elbows up) or from being able to avoid colliding with Trump and face his bullying attitude.
We desperately need at least one government to actually stand up against that orange stain of human life. Otherwise he’s just going to keep doing what he’s doing, and worse. Then we won’t be able to go back.
I just don’t understand Carney’s strategy here. We’ve seen repeatedly that Trump likes to bluster and threaten, but he’ll back down at the slightest inconvenience. He can dish it out, but he can’t take it.
If we adopt a stronger position and apply counter-tariffs, specifically targeting swing states to hurt Trump in the midterms, he’ll fold like an origami taco.
If Trump does implement these tariffs, Carney needs to hit back hard.
It’s a pretty weak statement. I think it’s time to start fighting fire with fire and unleashing personal attacks on Trump. Take a page out of Gavin Newsom’s playbook and start calling him „Diaper Don“, etc., etc. He would probably respect us more if we did that.
It would also be a good idea to start doing some performative stuff like summoning the US ambassador and publicly dressing him down in front of news cameras if not eject him from the country outright.
The PM stays civil and reasonable, as he should, while clearly pointing out that the tariffs are driving up costs for Americans.
No point in rising to the bait (although Doug Ford will not resist). Tough talk just makes Trumplethinskin more vindictive, and risks alienating possible allies in the US who would like to get back to business as usual.
Weak response. Actually do something..
Oh I forgot, Carney is just here for 4 years to line his pockets the same way Trump does. Probably planned this whole thing when they last saw each other.
Cue the comments saying that Carney is a genius meanwhile in 2 years things will get worse and it still be Trump’s fault.
This is BS. Time to stop bending over. Bullies need to be stood up to. Carney sounds weak with this statement, and a bit desperate. He needs to get a backbone.
