Pyrethroids are relatively inexpensive and considered among the safer insecticides for use around people, pets and homes. In places where mosquito-borne diseases are common, pyrethroids can play an important role in limiting transmission. In North Carolina, however, they are often used to reduce nuisance biting.

When I was a kid – 1960s – my dad used to spray DDT in the back yard, and we had to stay out of the garden while he did so. I don’t think he was that unusual, so what has changed recently?

I’m proud that the town I work for ceased spraying and instead have been installing bat boxes to try to help encourage natural population control. Spraying is so nasty too, especially for the operator of the truck. It never worked. Encourage your local municipality to do the same.
I’m still going to spray the dogs’ half of the yard. Ticks and other critters can move to the other 75% of my yard, just stay off my dogs.
