My brother is a self-described „MAGA Patriot“. He dropped out of school in the 9th grade and is proud of the fact that he’s never a read a book. He’s now in his 50s, still does back breaking manual labor (alongside legal migrants he despises), and literally believes that Trump is a genius.

People like my brother worship Trump and do not even remotely care about the damage he is doing to our country.

The poorly educated don’t love him back.

Wasn’t there an article yesterday about rural voters becoming more favorable of Trump? I don’t believe any articles about his poll numbers. It’s not like it’s doing anything.

Ratings mean nothing- voting- overwhelming numbers voting- means everything.

This is the kind of polling shift that actually matters because Trump’s political strength has depended heavily on voters without college degrees. The Echelon poll has him at only 41 percent approval and 57 percent disapproval among voters with a high school education or less. That is a 34-point swing from the beginning of his second term, when he was at net plus 18 with the same group. One poll should never be treated as gospel, but the article also points to similar erosion in other polling, especially among independents without college degrees. If that continues into the midterms, Republicans have a real problem because this is not some peripheral group. It is a major part of the coalition that put him back in office.

What makes this especially interesting is that Trump built so much of his appeal around distrust of experts, universities, the press, government professionals, and anyone portrayed as an “elite.” That strategy worked because it turned education and expertise into cultural enemies rather than simply sources of information. But eventually people still judge a president by what happens in their own lives. If prices remain high, housing stays unaffordable, jobs feel less secure, or government becomes more chaotic, attacking professors and journalists stops being enough. Resentment can mobilize voters, but it cannot indefinitely substitute for results.

Hofstadter was writing in response to McCarthyism, but his argument goes much further back. He describes a recurring American suspicion of education, expertise, universities, and the “life of the mind,” especially when intellectuals are portrayed as arrogant, disloyal, impractical, or disconnected from ordinary people. He also explains how politicians turn that resentment into a form of populist power by claiming that common sense and instinct are superior to trained knowledge.

The book it keeps this from looking like something Trump invented from scratch. He exploited a very old American tradition. Hofstadter shows how anti-intellectual politics repeatedly rises during periods of rapid change, when people feel that experts and institutions control a world they no longer understand. Trump’s version added television, social media, conspiracy culture, and personal grievance, but the underlying formula is familiar.

The irony is that anti-intellectual politics eventually runs into reality. You can dismiss economists, scientists, civil servants, judges, teachers, and journalists as corrupt elites, but governing a modern country still requires competence. When the promised results do not arrive, even the voters most receptive to the rhetoric can start noticing the gap. That may be what this poll is beginning to show.

I literally saw a post just yesterday that said his approval rating had rebounded with rural voters, UP from an all time low, so, which is it.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter because X amount of the country still approves, and X amount is too fucking high no matter how you slice it.

I don’t care if his approval rating was 20%, that’s still 1/5th of our voter base that’s dumb as shit, vindictive, ignorant, racist, or some combo of all.
