Watching preferred short videos may temporarily quiet brain regions involved in self-control and monitoring, and this effect could be linked to levels of the brain chemical glutamate. This research was published in [*NeuroImage*](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuroimage.2026.121722).

Short-video platforms are built around quick, engaging clips that users can continue or skip within seconds. These platforms can be entertaining and harmless for many people, but researchers have become increasingly interested in why some users find them difficult to stop using. One possible explanation is that immersive, pleasurable viewing may reduce the need for active monitoring and self-control.

The authors concluded that immersive viewing of preferred short videos deactivates the cognitive control network, and individual differences in this deactivation are linked to glutamate metabolism.

When someone gets better at a particular skill, the brain has found ways to optimize the skill, resulting in less brain activity. The researchers mention that this could be the reason for reduced activity in this study, and that alone is not really a cause for concern for activities that aren’t meant to be really cognitively demanding.

If there is a problem with short form video content, I think that can be addressed without targeting privacy rights through things like social media bans.

There are a lot of reasons kids would not want to think as hard or much right now. Everything is very overwhelming, espeically with the erosion of minimal rights for children, the loss of rights for girls and women, the bigotry everywhere, capitalism’s bs and poverty, and the rise of fascism.

You have to have a reason people want to be present and don’t need to try so hard to find ways to deal with impossible stressors. People take advantage of these crises to make money, but it’s a multifaceted issue.
