Trump’s stupidy has no limit. Meanwhile, no offer to help Canadians fight the 900 active wildfires. Like if threaths would magically stop smoke.

Well, if this that big a concern we should help the US reach net zero emissions by cutting off all oil shipments south.
Even the hallowed Ronald Reagan was smart enough to understand that environmental issues have no boundaries and negotiated an Acid Rain reduction treaty with Mulroney.
The tarriffs will continue until morale improves. Trump: „Hey, I know we’re doing a bunch of stuff to reduce your government revenue while also pressuring you to spend more on military, but can you spend even more on forest fires or else we’ll tarriff you even more?“
Such stupid stupid stupid concept of an idea. Like seriously, do they think debt is free? (They certainly act like it with the way they budget their government).
Ottawa’s response should be that because the forest fires are in large part being caused by climate change/greenhouse gas emissions, and because the Trump administration refuses to acknowledge or take any level of appropriate action in meeting emission standards, Canada will therefore be cutting off all exports of oil, electricity, and potash to the US effective immediately with 0 notice so that we can assist the wayward Americans in managing their emissions.

It’s a good reminder for those who keep telling us that the US is still our ally and that we should align with them instead of „diluting“ our partnerships with Europe and (god forbid) China!
The US is now more unstable than North Korea. Carney is right to smile at him and nod his head and then turning around to deal with real leaders of other countries around the world.
As it is now, in July 2026, it is quite difficult to find a more unstable head of state than Donald Trump.
Canadian officials need to make it clear to Republicans in the US that even if Canada’s forest management was outstanding (it’s good right now but could be improved), these large continent-scale wildfire outbreaks can still occur in the summer due to:
* lightning strikes
* prolonged drought
* extreme heat waves
* low humidity
* strong winds
* abundant dry fuels
* insect infestations (e.g. bark beetles) creating dead trees
* disease-killed forests
* heavy fuel buildup from decades of growth
* peat-rich soils
* remote and inaccessible terrain delaying suppression
* multiple simultaneous ignitions overwhelming firefighting resources
* rugged topography that accelerates fire spread
* pyrocumulonimbus firestorms generating erratic winds and new ignitions
* long-term climate warming increasing the frequency of severe fire weather
This Republican notion in the US that these wildfires can be prevented with „proper forest management“ is ridiculous. Wildfires have occurred for millions of years and will continue to occur. It’s like blaming the US for hurricanes that move up north.
It’s just another example of why the US under Trump is no friend and no ally to Canada.

Reminder that Nicholas Dale, a veteran Canadian fire pilot fucking died in COLORADO this week helping Americans with their fucking out of control wildfires. He left behind a wife and two sons.

People still talk about the US as our „ally“ who we have some disagreements with. I think we need see things more clearly. The US is not our ally. They are an adversary. They mean us harm. There is no „good deal“ with these people. We need to go our own way. It will cost a lot of money. We will struggle in the near term. But we have decide what our sovereignty, and what our honour as a nation, is worth to us.
I mean hes not wrong. as someone with direct experience with forest management, there’s been willful neglect. At all levels of government, but especially Federally. We give so much money to help other countries. while our home is literally on fire and we dont have the financial resources to be prepared and combat this. Extremely poor management. It’s a dick move for sure on Trump’s part, but we should not be giving him such easy justifications.
Irony being that although Canada’s got the wildfire smoke, its not the country currently burning itself to the ground.

If we were like them we would immediately suspend all cross-border wildfire assistance and immediately demand that they stop all smoke from US wildfires and factories from crossing the border into Canada.

Prevailing winds have the most impact on smoke direction. If the winds blew northward then Canada would be more impacted by the USA forest fires, but winds typically are eastward to south eastward directions.
As it is we are still getting Washington and Idaho smoke. Alaska seasonally contributes.
To all Canadian politicians… Please remember this before you send one plane or one fireman to help their fire season.
