    1. That’s cool, I wish I could spend 50 years instead of only 28 when I’m 50.

if only there was some way to make people aware of this that didn’t involve them seeing it on their screen.

At 10-11 hours a day working and commuting, I’m wasting 75-79% of my waking life 5 days a week.

I’ll look at a screen if I want to

    4. I spend 8h a day at work on the computer, then if I don’t sport I go home, watch a serie or movie or play some games.

Non screen time is eating, sleeping, house chores, sport, showers and holidays… I will spend more time in my life on a screen than not on a screen. Waiting for retirement now 😀

8-12, 13-17h = 8h of screentime just from my work, 17-20, 21-1h = 8h of screentime after work. I spend 16h per day on my screen

    6. I dont get the point here. Is staring at your rooms wall the superior solution? If not smart phone, it would be tv. Or a book. You do you. Don’t act like you would be a millionaire if it wasnt for that dang entertainment

This chart’s great. Of course, not all screentime’s created equal. Spending 4 hours looking at Excel for work isn’t really worse for you than doing it on paper like we would’ve done 50 years ago. And spending 2 hours a night watching great films or playing video games you love isn’t „burning your waking life“ the way spending that time on Reddit is (couldn’t be me).

I think the core problem is how much of that time is spent alone. Used to be you had to physically spend time with your friends, now you spend a lot of that time frantically keeping up with WhatsApp notifications. Or you’d have to go to the cinema to watch a film with strangers and probably some friends, but now so many of us don’t even have the attention spans to watch a film at home on the couch, so instead you sit across from your partner watching Insta Reels separately. That’s what’s notable about this chart to me, because 1 hour a day reading the headlines on my phone instead of a newspaper isn’t really a problem, but think of all the *years* we’re sitting alone on individual screens instead of looking another human in the face. That can’t be good for us.

The term „waking life“ biases this to a worse result. Obviously if you disregard 1/3 of your life, the thing your measuring for is going to be a larger proportion

    9. Lol im at like 12h-16h😂
Also how does it count if i use two devices at once? Can i achieve 24h+ that way haha

    10. Society: don’t look at your screen too much it’s bad for you!

Also society: digitizes EVERYTHING you need in your everyday life

To measure mine I need the calculations of 11h / day. Incomplete graph -.-

    12. Very interesting but I have a genuine question… why is the table calculated in terms of “waking life” instead of simply using 24-hour days? That makes the figures much less intuitive and arguably exaggerates how many “years” people are actually spending in front of screens.

Also, part of the problem with screen use is that many people sacrifice sleep because of it. Excluding sleeping hours from the calculation seems especially odd when excessive screen time can directly reduce those hours in the first place.

    13. if you only sleep 4 hours every night you gain many years awake though .. so give and take ..
