The ELT is going to be insane, but the real game changer for exobiosphere detection will be the Roman Space Telescope’s coronagraph and the LIFE interferometer. Those are the ones that can actually analyze atmospheres for biosignatures.

You keep looking for something really hard, its inevitable that we find life. Count down has already begun
We have to be very careful right now : nice signs of life have been found time and again, and disprove time and again. So, we will see. What is true though, is that our ability to find telltales signs of life in many places in the universe is growing fast, so the question will be answered soon.
The question is not about life in the universe : we are here thus it exists, thus it has a probability of existing, thus in an infinite, isotropic universe it is everywhere. Also, anthropic principle answer the question once and for all : it is impossible that this universe is not conductive to life, because if it wasn’t we would not be here.
The question is about its density, i.e. how far is the next place with living organism, is it in Europa, near Tau ceti, or at the other side othe galaxy, or the local group, or the local supercluster.
It is almost the same question for conciousness and/or civilization : one can imagine cetacean* equivalents in Europa, that could reach a renaissance-like level of development without us being aware of them – and them being aware of an outer universe. One can immagine that the milky way only contains us and a few bacteria.
* Yes, I know all the impossibilities. I just meant intelligent marine animals.
Finding Alien Life is now, only a matter of time. And this comes from someone who 100% believes that there is some other form of life elsewhere in this distant universe.
