    1. Regularly sleeping long hours each night is associated with higher levels of an Alzheimer’s-related protein in the blood, even accounting for other health factors, suggests a new study from UT Health San Antonio, the academic health center of The University of Texas at San Antonio.

      Modeling across a sample of 2,410 study participants found a link between sleep duration and phosphorylated tau 181, or p-tau181, a modified form of tau protein that is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, and is now detectable in blood.

      Regular sleep durations beginning at eight-and-a-half to nine hours per night were associated with higher p-tau181 levels, increasing most sharply beyond 10 hours, suggesting that long sleep might reflect early neurodegenerative processes.

This interpretation is consistent with evidence showing that long sleep duration associates with tau burden in sleep-regulatory regions and can predict faster progression to MCI or dementia.44 Objective sleep studies measuring sleep stages alongside AD biomarkers are needed to disentangle these possibilities.

      Basically the need or drive to sleep for so long is likely to reflect an underlying issue (not necessarily that people are harming their health by *choosing* to sleep longer).

      So there’s a ‚Goldilock’s Zone‘ for sleep too just like there is for so much else to do with the body.

      Would it being detectable in blood suggest that it’s being cleared from the brain?

    6. Could this study be mistaking causation for correlation? As in, maybe people who have chronic health issues and inflammation are more likely to be disabled and sleep long hours and the health issues increase the alzheimers risk. Maybe the long sleep is just a symptom of the underlying cause.

    7. Does it need to be continuous? We are usually woken up around midnight by the dogs. Not to mention normal wake up to turn over, go potty, etc…

      In the blood? Isn’t that where I want it, since that means it got flushed out of my brain? Isn’t that what quality amounts of REM sleep does: flush the amyloid proteins out of the brain?

      Sleeping that long 100% has to have another underlying issue causing this. I can’t imagine sleep itself is the cause.

      Some people sleep more because they just don’t want to be awake and deal with their depression, etc. I wonder if they could set up a study to differentiate between these 2 groups. Something tells me these 2 groups would have different results.

      Yeah and regularly sleeping less hours each night makes you miserable all sorts of other health problems. I’ll take the long hours and it’s health benefits

    14. It seems like such a weird take though, most animals I see and know do take smaller naps throughout the day, I’d like to think humans are/were also the same until full work days became the norm that make it much harder to take a quick nap one way or the other..

      It just confuses me how sleeping a lot would increase your risk of Alzheimer’s that much, unless we’re talking 10-16 hours of sleep.. While sleeping too little also seems to increase the risk the same way?

      As someone who sleeps 16+ hours on non-work nights, and 12+ hours on work nights, I’ll report back on my Alzheimer’s status when it happens…if I remember.

      So not sleeping enough: Alzheimers. Naps: Alzheimers. Sleeping too much: Alzheimers.

      How much sleep is enough vs too much? Who knows, check back once a week to see what the latest paper says.
