    1. **Adults with ADHD who struggle to manage emotions face a higher insomnia risk**

A recent study published in the [*Journal of Affective Disorders*](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jad.2026.121941) suggests that adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder who struggle to manage their emotions are more likely to experience insomnia symptoms. The findings provide evidence that trouble accessing effective emotional coping strategies plays a major role in these sleep disturbances, especially among young adults. This highlights the importance of addressing emotional health when treating sleep problems in people with ADHD.

    2. Now try having ADHD and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome… I *remember* sleep, it was nice I think.

    3. Purely anecdotal, but my own experience with difficulty managing emotions living with ADHD and Autism has been life long trouble with insomnia. The way I „dealt with it“ was 6 years of pretty bad alcoholism just to shut my brain down and let me sleep.

As of 2 days ago, I am 9 months sober. Whilst I’m back to being an insomniatic mess, I’m never looking back, it wasn’t worth it at all.

I’ve found a moderate to large dose of marijuana helps with both sleep and emotional regulation. I’m no medical science man, though, so this is not legally binding advice

    5. I’m Audhd and medicated with atomoxetine, my emotional dysregulation is mostly contained but I still suffer from insomnia – if it’s summer I use 1st generation antihistamines some of the time, and if I have some I’ll have CBD or a weed vape.

    6. I’m pretty good at emotional regulation but have ADHD and occasional insomnia… I think there’s a level of anxiety involved with it for my case though.

    7. I often struggle to sleep, or stay asleep, will randomly fall asleep for an hour in the day sometimes, I often think i’m not feeling anything, or feel dull etc….

      Interesting.

Glad they finally spent a thought for those who still have ADHD after growing up (so everyone)

ADHD medication kept my brain jacked and jarred perpetually until I stopped taking it.

While the benefits were great for a while – productivity, mood, focus, doing what needed to be done and it also increased my passion and enjoyment of my hobbies.

The downsides just became too much on my actual health and I needed a change.

My sleep and appetite sucked. Which made me feel completely and utterly exhausted, easily irritated, and had trouble distinguishing genuine emotions with emotional triggers from the medication and its side effects.

I would go to bed late, wake up early only feeling like I had 10 minutes of sleep while being active for 15+ hours a day.

Kudos to those who haven’t experienced this effect from their ADHD meds, but my God, am I happier without it.

Advice I can give anyone 30+. Exercise.

    10. I have autism and adhd. The only substance I can use regularly to shut my brain down is potent THC oil. I’ve never been a big drinker

I have ADHD and have had mild insomnia (waking up too early) since I started high school, which was when I started taking hard classes and got into my first relationship. Then when I started grad school and got into my second relationship, my insomnia got REALLY bad. I also am a super emotionally sensitive person and relationships are really overwhelming for me. I’m unemployed and single now because eventually my brain and body couldn’t handle it all. So glad to have read this article.

(meaningless science draws meaningless conclusions, ty for the money for the researchers)

      Answer is simple for me:

If I can’t manage them while they’re happening or during the day, my mind ruminates and overthinks the absolute heck out of them during the only time I have to myself, which is night time sleep… resulting in no sleep!

      Lovely .

    14. Maybe I have better control of my emotions in my old age than I thought. I used to struggle a lot with sleep but lately it’s been a bit of a superpower for me.

AuDHD and have struggled with sleep my entire life. if it’s not excess sensory input, then it’s rumination. if it’s not rumination, then it’s my brain having too many exciting things to find. if it’s not that, then it’s revenge bedtime procrastination. the only thing that’s ever helped are stimulants and weighted blankets.
