>British Steel has been taken into public ownership in the „national interest“, the government has announced.
>The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) said a new leadership team had been appointed to focus on „stabilising the business and developing a commercially sustainable, low-carbon future“.
>It argued that the decision protected not only thousands of jobs but also the sector’s „vital“ role in the economy.
>Britain’s second-biggest steel producer was taken into government control in April last year after it emerged that Jingye Group, its Chinese owner since 2020, had drawn up plans to close its two blast furnaces at Scunthorpe.

From the BBC article:
>Jingye has said it has begun the process of seeking compensation for nationalisation, having previously said the business was losing £700,000 a day. However, the UK government has said it could limit or refuse compensation.
Haha get fucked, should have accepted the governments above market offer to purchase it instead of demanding an insane price.

Good news,
It will take a lot of work and no guarantee that it can be commercially successful- but retaining steel making capabilities without the risk that foreign companies can shut it down is very much in the nations interest.
I hope this can be recognised as something positive

To be fair it was already under public ownership
Just now it’s the British public instead of the Chinese public.

555 Million so far.
Costing in time and experienced staff working there, it’s not great value but important value for the country compared to starting it all from scratch, or risk reliant on open market for steel – which is in pretty much any modern equipment and infrastructure.

People say that it is vital for the national security to have national steel production, which is may be true. But I can’t believe this argument could stand real scrutiny if we don’t have the local supply chain and would be importing iron ore and coal from… China? Australia? Canada? Could as well import steel from those countries.

People are always saying we should nationalise certain business and have the government run them.
But all my life I have only seen the government be, at best, massively incompetent or, at worst, plain corrupt.
Looking at the PPE scandal and HS2 clusterfuck, how’s doesn’t anyone think the government is capable of running a steel mill?

Why? Why is the state propping up and company or industry that cant stand on its own? Why is steal in the national interest? What crisis do people imagine? This is not WW2 and the idea we will need it to build ships or tanks in war is laughable. Its takes bloody years to design and build ships. In our single BAE shipyward. We also need the ore which relies on global supply chains. Which in proper crisis will cease. Yes it would be great to have some heavy industry in this country, but it is not for the government to keep businesses afloat that, for whatever reason aren’t profitable. They are there however to check when something is being taxed or legislated out of existence and to see what could be done to alleviate some of that.p if appropriate.

British steel should never have been sold out to go private companies in the first place by the tories. They ran British steel into the ground but these are the first steps to fix in this country. This is a good for the countries economy.

What’s Nigel gonna do now? I thought his future was good as sealed.

If this is vital then surely so is allowing the North Sea to kick off again?
