    1. That battle marked nothing.

It’s just something that first Jan Długosz obsessed about (for he needed a rally point for contemporary politics in mid-15th century) and then was dredged out by Karol Szajnocha in mid-19th (who in turn needed it as a national rally point during partitions).

As a result, it completely skews perception of both the battle and Polish history as such – an utterly insignificant battle with even bigger utterly wasted potential is treated like some biggest thing ever, and at the expense of actually important victories/peace negotiations that did matter and/or changed stuff. Consider just this – battle of Grunwald achieved fuck-all, yet is masturbated to non-stop for the past 160+ years. The Thirteen Years‘ War from half a century later, which actually did crush the Teutonic Order and made it into little bitch, is either glossed over entirely, or mentioned as an afterthought.

Grunwald is the same kind of bullshit make-believe as the „eternal Polish-Hungarian friendship“. It’s a misguided national symbol, and promoted originally for (very) short-term goals.
