This is such a vastly idiotic idea. How/why is anyone seriously thinking about this? The atmosphere alone will distort and absorb whatever energy beam might be sent from this mirror. Ridiculous.

Russia tried this in the 90s called Znamya to mixed results. More of a test project that more or less stalled.

This would be way more useful to direct light to Mars or another planet to increase agriculture viability if we ever managed to get a dome there. Not make things worse here.

I’m sure Stephen Colbert will appear to make a more precise correction, but Time got this wrong. „Eärendil“ is from Tolkien. He was the half-elven seafarer who carried the morning star. Tolkien took inspiration for the name from the Old English „Ēarendel“ which derives from Norse „Aurvandill“ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurvandill).
So if the satellite was named after the Old English word it would be Ēarendel. If it’s spelled Eärendil it’s taken from Tolkien.

So, this mirror will not turn night into day. Its maximum brightness is 1/400,000th the brightness of the noon sun.
There’s an argument to be made for lighting up a solar farm at night, however, investing the money in energy storage probably makes more sense.
Also, if you’re worried about messing with human circadian rhythms, you should look into a Chinese proposal to illuminate cities at night for crime prevention.
