**Highlights:**
* Early-onset dementia is when someone under 65 is diagnosed with any type of dementia.
* A new study has found early-onset dementia diagnosis is associated with reduced work productivity up to 15 years before being diagnosed.
* The study does not prove that early-onset dementia lowers work productivity in the years before diagnosis; it only shows an association between the two.
* Over the course of the study, for each person with early-onset dementia, there were total average productivity losses of 74,577 Euros, or approximately 86,000 U.S. dollars, when compared to people without dementia.
* The number of years of lower productivity varied depending on the type of dementia.
People diagnosed with early-onset dementia had reduced work productivity up to 15 years before diagnosis, according to a study published July 15, 2026, in *Neurology*, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology*.* Researchers also found the number of years of lower productivity varied depending on the type of dementia.

Casually paving the way to workplace diagnosis for dementia. No way the shareholders can tolerate the loss in productivity.
Are we sure it the dementia and not the pure hate they have for the work they do or burn out?
Does burn out increase the chance of early onset dementia?
Which capitalist put a fiscal sum to the productivity?
Let’s penalize their social score! AI won’t get demented (already is) so productivity will be saved brothers!!!!
Putting a monetary value on the loss of productivity associated with early onset dementia is ghoulish.
we can use this so that people can be gove the option of pre dementia euthanasia – which saves companies lots of money!
>The study does **not prove** that early-onset dementia lowers work productivity in the years before diagnosis; it only shows an association between the two.
[…]
To determine productivity loss, researchers calculated the average annual income difference between people with early-onset dementia and people without dementia.
A correct headline would have been: People diagnosed … **earned less**
Edit: even worse, they just have proven that people experiencing dementia before their retirement, receive less money.
This is such a fucked up way to measure dementia
This headline feels so dystopic.
Bet this will be my boss
We need to measure physical health and fiscal losses because together because?
For such sweeping statements the core data set is way too small, the correlation is discutable and in general it’s the sort of paper that gets published because peer review is dead.
Yeah, that’s the important thing to measure. Won;t somebody think of the shareholders
uh oh. the general malaise i feel each day in my office job has suddenly acquired a troubling correlation!
As someone who has a father diagnosed with dementia, His work definitely took a dramatic downturn in productivity WHEN HE FOUND OUT HE HAD DEMENTIA.
It will tend to do that to you, you know.
Won’t *someone* think of the capitalists?!
Your productivity levels have reduced over the last 5 years! We will administer a dementia test, if you have dementia you’re fired, if you don’t have dementia you’re also fired.
Alright so 15 years before diagnosis there’s a productivity „loss“ of 74’577EUR between that arbitrary point and diagnosis, presumably on a curve but an average of 4972EUR per year.
Just doing some back of the envelope envelope mathematics here, but if I’ve done this right then using productivity decline as a predictive metric I should receive my diagnosis… Tomorrow afternoon.
I always thought dementia was terrifying, but I never imagined it could… lower… *work productivity!*
I feel like measuring productivity losses might not be the best direction to approach this topic from. Not in current socio-economic environment globally
Dementia gets diagnosed at the point where it’s so severe it starts compromising your ability to live your life. But there is a period – often years or even decades long – where you’re being negatively impacted by the pathology, but it’s mild enough that you can compensate, and people with high cognitive reserve (people who were more intellectually capable pre-pathology) can afford to lose more before the losses become crippling. The sad reality is that someone who is diagnosed with dementia probably has 20 years of slow, steady decline and loss of faculties before they receive a diagnosis.
Capital told you the sniffles come without consequences, statistics says otherwise
repeat after me: productivity is a meter of the top 1% and not relevant for employee gratification or life rating.
Won’t somebody think of the productivity!!!
Forget about your friends family and life satisfaction, your productivity loss is the real loss
What exactly is the point of associating early on set dementia with the value of productivity loss? Like they really didn’t mention how this study actually helps people dealing with dementia. It just indicates that they’re costing their employers around 12k euros a year. What’s the message this study is sending? „oh hey, just to let you know, that employee that just got diagnosed with dementia, you lost around 12k a year of missing productivity from them.“
I can definitely see greedy companies adding a $75,000 deductible to all dementia related claims from this study or worse yet, somehow finding a way to apply that 75k loss retroactively to all already processed claims, taking back insurance payments, and putting the patient on the hook with the hospitals and doctors.
Everything is harder to do, you need more sleep to function, you need to focus more for less understanding, you forget things you actively tried to remember. Moods can sour for no reason, You withdrawal, you isolate. The 15 year thing is a long time, but that’s not too surprising to me, considering how deep it affects your life and those around you.
Love that they even have a number to add to this dystopian number
productivity? productivty of whom? what in the dystopian title is that supposed to mean?
