69… Nice
You can’t make the rich pay their fare share.
so…69% of Americans loves them a little socialism.
The minimum should be something like an indexed living wage provided to the government for every robot/ai that replaces a human in any job/role.
Then that goes to that person as directly as possible.
Nationalized Vapor.
Does anybody really think an American sovereign wealth fund would be used to support workers through job disruption or to improve people’s lives in any way? They’d use it to build Trump hotels in Gaza or something.
So when the AI bubble bursts, what happens? Government bailout?
Yeah that’s never happening …
Lol…thats not how capitalism works
That’s a terrible idea simply because it incentivizes keeping it alive… And no one wants it alive
Will it not be too difficult to define what is an AI firm? Like: Anthropic, easy. OpenAI, easy. That’s all they do. But Google? Well hang on it’s not just AI it’s ten other things with AI sprinkled around. Microsoft, even harder. Work your way down, to smaller companies that use AI somewhere in their product. Say Squarespace introduces an AI feature, how much is it really an AI company? Some telephony company introduces a new AI phone tree feature you can turn on and is it now an AI company? Your radiologists software company introduces an AI report generator, is it now 50% to the government?
The specifics might be questionable, but the sentiment isn’t. Generally speaking, people want the AI companies to compensate everyone whose jobs they’ve destroyed and whose lives they’ve thrown into chaos.
You can’t throw millions of people out of the job market, make it impossible for them to support themselves and their families, and pretend they’re not going to want to force those companies to pay for their actions. It’s inevitable.
Considering that all the CEOs of AI companies are trying to convince us that AGI/ASI and a utopian future of unlimited wealth in which none of us have to work anymore is inevitable, it’s only fair that they put their money where their mouth is. If money does become entirely meaningless in the future thanks to their products, they might as well smooth the transition as we get there.
I mean, they’re only developing these products for the benefit of all humanity, right?
Right?
Lol, what „wealth“ fund? Do people realize they spend something like 5 dollars to make 2 dollars in revenue, at best? And they have no way to hike the prices without tanking their market share?
You’ll just end up locking in the bailout when they inevitably face bankruptcy!
First of all, nice.
Second of all, we know objectively that only the top 10% can influence policy. Wanna guess which percentage the 69% belong to?
Hell would freeze over before these companies even give 1 cent to regular folk
Putting aside the cost associated with a 5th Amendment taking, how would that even work? Are they going to seize the stock out of people’s 401ks?
Also, what happens if you buy an unprofitable company and then everyone quits? What happens to the US ecconomy overall when this becomes a threat hanging over the head of every business?
A public fund would be syphoned by the Trump family, I know it, you know it, everybody knows it.
I’m not sure why we’d want to invest in a money pit that is sure to go bankrupt. Lets do this with the oil companies though, that is our resource
AI isnt making any money though.
How about using that to fund social security and universal healthcare?
The „public“ is currently the fucking Trump administration.
If you ask the population if they want 50% of any industry handed to them you’re going to get a lot of yes.
Sounds like a great way for America to tank its economy to be honest.
Takes 50% off the valuation of everything, which is already so-much-horseshit anyway. Sticks it into a fund which will cost money to administer.
And when the stock goes down, that’s just lost money, and when it soon becomes worthless and the fund decides to sell out, the only people who would have profited would be the people administering the scheme.
It’s a bit wholesale theft (from the companies involved), which I don’t mind saying is probably a bit of payback, a bit scraping-off-the-top, a massive „let’s watch this stock plummet for no reason, oh wait, we can personally profit by controlling when they sell off that stock“ insider-trading, and quite a lot of „that money is never going to get to where it needs to go“.
I can see that as a perfect way to tank the entire economy in unscrupulous hands and I mean… look… (indicates current state of the US). This isn’t like Norway… it’s not like that stuff is going to be earmarked for pension funds and the like, with withdrawl limits and strictly controlled investments. It’s not spread across 8500 companies like Norway’s is.
It’s gonna be a Trump fund to cherry-pick what shares he wants, manipulate the rest deliberately, remove ALL value from that fund as soon as possible, and then blame „Oh, well, AI didn’t work“ for the losses, not to mention diluting by half the world’s largest companies (and their suppliers and contractors, like nVidia, Samsung etc.) just by doing it in the first place. And who’ll pay for it? The American taxpayers and others outside the US.
Right into the presidents pocket
Those stocks aren’t going to be worth much in the long run though, AI is a farce
Wouldn’t that just sorta be like a bailout.. with more steps. Why not just tax them higher and put the funds into social security or something…
The Fifth Amendment says otherwise. The government can’t just seize half a company just because they’d like to have it.
This would literally put US taxpayers on the hook for something that isn’t profitable, and likely won’t be for a long time.
fuck AI
Surprise, those firms aren’t profitable
This assumes what they currently call „AI“ is going to turn a profit.
Sam Altman wants OpenAI to be valued at $1 trillion, yet it’s still burning money to not even do what its advertised as being able to do. It’s more expensive than human workers, doesn’t give companies all that free productivity they were promised, and produces errors, hallucinations, and sycophancy.
I think the AI techbros have had enough money to prove their concept, and they haven’t. Talking about a sovereign wealth fund for AI is a bit like demanding that we have a similar fund for Earth’s homeowners to offset how their property values will plunge once all that land on Mars opens up to development.
I don’t know how I feel about this.
In my mind it may be an attempt to make certain firms preferred when the AI bubble bursts, creating another „too big to fail“ situation, where the irresponsible behavior of the companies who have shovelled money into the AI furnace have to face the reckoning, the partially publically owned one will be bailed out, and the Sam Altman’s will keep their power money and influence, even though they gambled recklessly with the economy.
This is hedging bets.
But maybe I am a bit cynical about the value of AI.
Fighting climate change can’t support the waste of power and clean water that is projected to go to AI.
Soon we will hit a tipping point. No amount of money will be able to restore what we currently enjoy. We can’t afford AI.
While we’re at it— How bout forcing them to be solar instead of running gas turbines
Are the tech CEOs trying to use this strategy as a bail out?
