      Hey everyone! It’s Rana from the DW newsroom. Here’s a short summary of the story:
      A German court in Bavaria has sentenced an Iraqi couple linked to the so-called Islamic State militant group to lengthy prison sentences over the enslavement and abuse of two Yazidi girls.
      The couple was charged with committing war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. They were also accused of sexually abusing children.
      The man was sentenced to life in prison, while the woman was given a juvenile sentence of nine and a half years.

      Well definitely a first time i have seen that a German court sentenced someone for life in prison.

      Didn’t he follow the islamic rules for how to treat slaves?

      „The Quran mandates treating slaves (referred to as „those whom your right hands possess“) with profound kindness and equity. It strictly requires owners to provide them with food and clothing identical to their own, prohibits overloading them with work, and strongly encourages their emancipation.“

      >They allegedly kept a 5-year-old Yazidi girl as a slave starting in late 2015, and a 12-year-old from October 2017.

      >According to the prosecutor, the couple bought the two children in a bazaar in Iraq.

      >The man is accused of having raped the girls, while the woman allegedly prepared the room and put makeup on one of the girls.

      >The couple also exerted „harsh physical violence“ on the girls, forcing them to work constantly and subjecting them to beatings, according to prosecutors.

      >Before they left Syria in November 2017, the suspects allegedly handed the girls over to other IS members.

      Anybody know what the exact charges were?

      Under German law, life sentences are normally reserved for murder or a small selection of extremely rare and exotic crimes that are very hard for most people to commit (like conspiring with a foreign power to overthrow the democratically elected German government).

      So did they commit murder, or did they manage to commit one of those exceptional crimes?

      As a German-Ezidi, I am glad that he got a life sentence. Though he deserves more… I hope that all other IS members in Germany (especially the female members!) will also get their sentences.
