    Großeltern aus Belgien hatten diesen Aufkleber (ein Freund sagte, er klinge wie etwas, das Vlaamsbelang sagen würde)


    Ich habe darüber nachgedacht, mich bald tätowieren zu lassen. Übrigens sind meine Großeltern verstorben, daher kann ich sie nicht wirklich etwas dazu fragen und sie haben niemandem in der Familie beigebracht, wie man Flämisch spricht.

    Ich wollte, dass mein Tattoo etwas Wichtiges für mich (meine Familie und mein Erbe) ist, also wollte ich das Vlaamse Leeuw und diese Worte haben, die meine Großeltern in ihrem Haus hatten.

    Zum Hintergrund: Ich bin halb Afroamerikanerin und halb Belgierin. Meine Großeltern starben vor meiner Geburt, aber sie waren liebevoll zu meiner Schwester, die ebenfalls gemischter Herkunft ist. Ich frage mich, ob es in Ordnung wäre, sich tätowieren zu lassen, oder scheint es, als wäre ich ein Unterstützer von Vlaamsbelang?

      in my honest opinion it is a bit weird to tattoo this or this slogan somewhere even if it has sentimental value. If you really wanna go with a Flemish-USA tattoo id combine the lion with the US flag or the statue of liberty holding a flemish flag, or something goofy like that, being playful with symbolism. To put this vague statement on your body is kinda umusual given the banality of a Flemish-American identity, it’s sort of like a “Proud to be a true American” slogan.

      Alternatively perhaps add a quote by a famous Flemish author; for example
      “*Een klein goed woord breekt grote gramschap.” (H. Conscience) -* something like “A kind word can defuse great anger.”

      or
      *“Ervaring verduistert de jaren” (H. Claus) -* something like “Experience darkens the years”

      Something more tongue-in-cheek could be a quote of a famous flemish tv show like FC De Kampioenen etc,… Your body your choice, just brainstorming here at night with you

      Well this is a post that kinda mindfucks you at 4am.

      On a more serious note; for US logic maybe ok but in Belgium you’d be associated with Flemish nationalism (and its not so tolerant side effects towards foreigners) considering your background that might be a little weird. Do you know where exactly from Belgium they’re from?
      If you want to go for something Belgian but local try looking into their coat of arms for example, city or province maybe. A tattoo of a local monument is also popular, like the cathedral of Antwerpen for example.
      If you really want to go for the lion, avoid an all black version cause that’s definitely associated with right wing nationalism. The Belgian lion has red claws and tongue.

      I’m a ‚vlaamse Amerikaan‘ (born in Western Flanders, moved to the US 23 years ago and dual national today) and I wouldn’t put that on my body.
      The flemish lion is seen as almost synonymous with the separatist movement and vlaams belang.
      One way for your tattoo to not be associated with extremism could be to put the lion on a background of the Belgian flag.

      Since your grandparents banner has both that could work.

      There’s a lot of misinformation in this thread about the Flemish flag and what the different versions mean. I would advise you to take everything that is posted about it so far with a grain of salt.

      My suggestion would be to figure out the specific region your grandparents are from, and take inspiration from that. Considering yourself „flemish“ outside of the context of the language you speak is something really closely related with seperatism, which in Belgium is also closely linked with right wing political ideas.

      Being proud to be from a city or region (like West-flanders, East-flanders, Antwerp, …) however is a lot more common, and far less political. Rivalry there is a lot more tongue in cheek.

      Modern day flanders is a combination of many regions that originally used to be many different things. This is why East-flanders is in the middle of present day flanders. It also means there are some pretty big cultural (and dialect) differences between some regions.

      The Flemish lion is a good thing to tattoo.

      There’s nothing extreme about it all, the people who says so are the same ones that say the US flag is right wing or the English flag is right wing, etc.

      It’s absurd. There’s a lot of styles, the latest official one has some red it in (it’s from the 1970s).

      Yeah no. Don’t tattoo that on your body. Despites this sticker probably out dating vlaams belang in age, it is indeed highly right wing separatist vibes that it gives. Flags are tricky stuff in europe and many have connotations that are less desirable. The flemish lion, despites being an official symbol, has been claimed almost completely by the right wing. I wouldn’t use it at all.

      If I would be looking for a tattoo to celebrate my heritage of Belgian American, I would somehow mix manneke pis with the statue of liberty. 🙂

      If your grand parents were belgian but not your parents you are not half belgian , you need a dual nationality for that .

      The black on yellow lion might not be the best choice, my guy. It’s considered by most people as the collaborator’s flag, as in nazi collaborators. And most people that use it are right wing/extreme right wing lunatics.
