Just the 2nd time in 9 world cups that the number 1 ranked team has made the semis is a pretty unbelievable stat.

I also saw this and thought it was a little crazy, but then realized this partially happened because FIFA set up the bracket to guarantee that if 1-4 won their groups, they couldn’t meet in the knockout round until now. This was *not* true in most previous Cups.

What’s tough about the World Cup is the beginning is so exciting, but you usually see similar teams at the end because the disparity in resources between the top 10 teams and everyone else is so big.
In 100 years, only 8 countries have won. One of those countries will win again in 2026.

Second and third ranked teams are twice as likely to reach semis as top ranked teams and before this year, it wasn’t even close.

It was really obvious pre-tournament that this was the direction we were heading. Only these four teams and Portugal were in any way capable of winning the whole thing. The markets were way too high on the field (and especially on Brazil and the Netherlands).

In hindsight it was a very predictable tournament. However through the group league and early knock out rounds you did see upsets and surprises everyday

If you use the actual elo of FIFA rankings, you could make the chart’s height intuitively read better. (Bigger = stronger) and it would much more accurately reflect the strength of the final teams. (Being ranked 4th isn’t 1/4 the power of being ranked 1st)

Well yeah. Now that they have VAR to just take goals off the board FIFA just chooses the most profitable team to advance. No more upsets.

Little known fact: Both of the semi-final matches are going to be officially used to settle territorial disputes. The winner of the England-Argentina match determines who gets to have the Falklands/Malvinas. And the winner of the France/Spain match gets to have sole custody of Andorra.

Over 60% of players in the last 4 teams (squads) play in one country’s premier league. This weekend games looked like mid table premier league clashes to be honest. Style, tactics have been homogenized. AI is going to make this even worse imo. You could probably predict future world cups on where players play and genetics.

It’s a shame what happened to Bulgarian football. I considered just a step below your Brazils and Germanys. Corruption degraded their football structure, and they haven’t been as good since. The same goes for Romanian football, although they look like they might be getting back on the right track.

I think what we’re seeing here is the added impact of an additional knockout round. Lower-ranked teams have an extra round of play to get through, often directly against much higher-ranked teams. Also the rankings are becoming better at identifying good teams?
