    1. How would that go. „Hey we’re a tiny island….. the world is massive and we have no control over what other people do…..bugger“

    2. Valuable-Ad2028 on

      Briefing:

      We’ve failed to stop it.

It might be worth pursuing energy independence for its own sake but at this point any emissions restrictions is just unilateral disarmament.

We need to pursue adaptation and mitigation.

But no one wants to hear that. People think the world is making progress and we can avoid the consequences still…

    3. silly_goat_moat on

Oh great. So we’re going to hear grin and bare it don’t buy AC because our power comes from oil and gas so it’ll make things worse.

Also please ignore AI data centres and billionaires flying dresses around. Climate change is your fault not theirs.

    4. totheendandbackagain on

We can, and should do more to reduce the harms of global warming.

And if we do not, what will we say to our children, or grand children?

I do not want to say „I knew it was getting worse, but I wasn’t willing to do anything more“

    5. BroodLord1962 on

What would be the point? We have been told about the climate crisis for over 30 years and it’s been ignored, not just by the government but by people in general. What we do makes so little difference in the grand scale of things, it’s world leaders that could make a difference, but when you have idiots like Trump who deny climate change even exists, there really is no hope for the human race and the planet

    6. Are we not spending enough time separating things into various recycling bins?

    7. Old-Information3311 on

„we can’t afford to do net zero and we’re going to open a bunch of data centers so we can do ai scanning of everything that shows up on your screen“

    8. AceOfGargoyes17 on

The “emergency briefing” referred to here is a 50 minute film of a briefing given in November last year by ten experts to 1200 invited MPs, business leaders, media heads etc, into the likely impact of climate change on the UK economy, food security, national security, public health etc, what we might be able to do to limit climate collapse, and what we should be doing to adapt and build resilience to it.

There have been hundreds of local screenings of the film already, and you can read key points on each of the issues via the National Emergency Briefing website:
      https://www.nebriefing.org/

(And no, none of the recommendations include “people shouldn’t use AC”.)

    9. peakedtooearly on

This would anger the boomers and the Reform supporters.

      So it cannot ever happen.

    10. Hot-Efficiency7190 on

What exactly would be the objective of the briefing? Tell us what’s be said over and over the past decade or so? Tell us we’re in it now, not much can be done?

Maybe announce some large scale carbon capture to reverse CO2 emissions, anything else is just telling people it’s raining when they’re wet.

    11. Neurologicalmassage on

If you haven’t seen the film, please do – it’s very well done and provides hope as well as clearly explaining the issues. The screening locations can all be found on the [interactive map here](https://www.nebriefing.org/screening-map)

If you want to watch the full briefings from the comfort of your own home, they are all available on the same website – [start with this one.](https://www.nebriefing.org/expert-briefings/climate)

There is also the petition that this article is based on. If you want to see the Government provide a briefing on the climate (and given the information they were provided last autumn, we really want them to!) then please consider [signing it here](https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/767687)

Anyone got any questions on it, I’ve seen the film and am trying to arrange a showing local to me, I answer what I can

    12. ServoSkull20 on

What’s the fucking point? The idiots who need convincing will just go straight on Facebook and see lies that contradict it.

    13. pajamakitten on

They will say it is OK because we are aiming for net zero in 2050, ignoring we are already decades late for net zero doing any good for stopping climate change. Now is the time for ramping up bet zero as fast as possible, going for climate adaptation, and for a mass planting drive to get as many trees, hedges, flowers etc. out there. Any climate message that actually goes out will be damp squib.

    14. DrPepperShark on

I’d need to be paying my TV licence to watch it. Checkmate government.

    15. Krazykennyg on

Don’t listen to the media bullshit the politicians bullshit the climate change knobheads who can all afford this crap they are dishing out to the people, scare mongering.the earth is going through a extinction event so weather we were here or not would not make any difference.A volcano can spew out more co2 than humans since we have been here so stop with the bullshit.

    16. Dark_Akarin on

Ban cruise ships that use more than X fuel per person (that should cut down on the floating cities).

    17. **Here are some key points about climate change that are for some reason not widely known:**

We have known about this issue with certainty since 1988. It’s been about 40 years since.

The target set in 2015 at Paris Agreement to limit global average temperature rise up to 1.5°C (20 years average) is impossible to meet now based on current emissions as we already hit 1.5°C in 2024.

There are 9 major climate tipping points (impossible to reverse). 2 of them have been tipped. 3 are at the edge of tipping. To make matters worse, it’s all interconnected so tipping of one point accelerates the tipping of other point.

There are also 9 planetary boundaries which are basically limits which are required for sustaining human lives. 7 of these planetary boundaries have already been crossed.

Majority of emissions come from industries. Almost all the products we use everyday have had emissions during their production.

Industries are profit centric, so they would only reduce emissions if they are mandated by govt or if consumer behaviour changes, meaning when consumers en masse stop buying products with higher emissions.

Govt can put regulations, but that will increase the price for end customers. Govt can’t really force change in consumer behaviour because it’s political suicide. They would be out of power for a very long time.

It’s a global issue, so emissions reduction by high emission countries matter the most.

Developed countries have lower emissions in part because they import a lot of their necessities from countries with high emissions.

If regulations are put in place by countries with high emissions to reduce emissions, it will result in price increases across the world. But global economy is already not doing good.

Its already impacting our grocery prices (El Nino in 2024 increased price of coffee, chocolate, sugar, rice etc. and this year we expect a Super El Nino, so…)

So essentially, we have been stuck in this stalemate for about 40 years. Significant work has been done for using renewable sources of energy but it’s just not enough on its own.

Not sure, what a single country can do about it. The answer is not much tbh. Tackling this will require global coordination like the one we had for ozone hole. But that was easy, ban a few substances globally and we were good to go. Not so easy when nearly all industries have emissions.

Here’s a funny (but yet not so funny because its real) clip on it that was aired more than 10 years ago: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNYp6oc37ds](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNYp6oc37ds)

Here’s another that explains the problem and what we can do as individuals: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiw6_JakZFc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiw6_JakZFc)

A lot of negative comments making excuses and missing the point. This isn’t about telling us off, it’s about educating people of the reality and hopefully to make more informed and better decisions. From day to day stuff (e.g. maybe I’ll stop buying all that cheap tat from China, maybe I won’t eat meat, maybe I’ll walk to the shop rather than drive etc) to political voting (avoiding voting for climate deniers).

    19. AshamedQuail4 on

I watched a helicopter fly from Chelsea to North Wales last night on the flight radar. Normally helicopters flying over are air ambulances or operated by the police, but no. Just some wealthy guy who spent an hour in a helicopter commuting home from London. When will we address the disparity in how much damage is being done by a wealthy few while the rest of us suffer?

    20. Good_Warning4576 on

Remember when the government was SO annoyed at Extinction Rebellion… arresting people???

    21. Next_Replacement_566 on

It’s a cycle: Use fossil fuels, world heats up, more humidity, heat gets trapped IN the humidity, people use fans to stay cool but can’t produce the amount of energy to overcome it so they put on nfossil fuels generators. Repeat.

    22. „Re-re-remember to recycle those vapes, guy, hahaha…“

We should’ve been matching in the streets over this in the poxy 90s, better too late then never I guess.

    23. Strange-Scientist706 on

“Emergency briefing”? What for? Shoulda listened to the screaming from scientists over past 50 years. Only thing they can tell you now is “You’re well fucked”.

    24. It’s so wild to say „don’t use plastic straws“ or „try not to use your air con“ while people like Taylor Swift or Elon Musk are flying private jets around just to pick up donuts or get involved in politics in countries they have no stakes in. Or companies like Monsanto and Coca Cola are draining countries of resources/holding farmers to ransom.

Like, maybe fucking go after the problem. I’m happy to wash my plastics for recycling and clean up my neighbourhood and stop drinking Starbucks but fucking do something at a bigger level. Hypocritical cunts.

    25. Efficient_Sky5173 on

It won’t happen. It would push lots of voters towards the Greens and making people and companies spend more money on “green” policies. Never.
The best way to cut emissions? Don’t have children. Either the climate apocalypse or superintelligent AI will get them anyway.
      Have a nice sunny Sunday.

    26. StiffAssedBrit on

If our useless politicians had any balls, they would take on the real culprits, the mega corporations run by the billionaire parasites, who seem to be able to do what the hell they like because they have obscene wealth.
But no, I’m the problem because I want to stay warm in the winter and to eat occasionally!

    27. the_real_codmate on

People don’t take action on things until it directly affects them.
Some people like these heatwaves and many simply don’t mind them.
This is the last century of this civilization, maybe last half century.
Whether the species survives is up for debate. Even if we do, I doubt we will learn anything from this.

      Koyaanisqatsi.
