    1. **Book smarts and life smarts are driven by the exact same intelligence, study finds**

For decades, intelligence tests have measured general knowledge by asking questions based on traditional academic subjects. A recent study reveals that information learned through personal life experiences and information learned in a classroom are actually driven by exactly the same underlying mental ability. The research, published in the journal [*Intelligence*](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.intell.2026.102007), suggests that human knowledge is a deeply unified trait, regardless of the setting in which it is acquired.

    2. This is utter nonsense. People with autism don’t have what people would call life smarts, but they can perform well academically.

    3. Different people are good at different things. What a groundbreaking revelation

    4. Title is dramatically over-interpreted. People were given one trivia quiz on school-based trivia and another trivia quiz on non-school-based trivia (the example given in the paper is „which cathedral was constructed in the year 18xx?“).

The performance on the two quizzes was highly correlated.

      A) this does not meaningfully demonstrate that the latent feature driving performance is actually atomic as suggested by the title

      B) this is extremely far from what most people refer to as „life smarts“.

      C) this uses esoteric knowledge as a proxy for intelligence, which is highly problematic.

When people say „book smarts vs street smarts“ they’re usually discussing the reality that the education system doesn’t do a good job to prepare people for everything. You do need to know more than just what you learned in school.

    6. I have often found that intelligent people are intelligent in most categories. And morons tend to be morons tend to be morons in most categories.

This is an Massively overstated finding. That science communicator is basically lying through their teeth with a marginally related study. Sure people who are good at school knowledge tend to be pretty good with general knowledge, a rather obvious finding. The key issue with this paper is it conflates „Life Skills“ With what amounts to general life trivia… That is also a form of learned trivia, just usually not in a classroom.

This’ll certainly embolden the „school of hard knocks“ crowd to say their experience is the equivalent of decades of research.
