    1. A recent study provides evidence that people who view pornography more frequently tend to experience higher levels of depressive symptoms, and this link remains consistent over time. The findings suggest that this relationship exists independently of a person’s age, gender, or moral beliefs about watching pornography. The research was published in the journal [*Psychiatry Research*](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.psychres.2026.117275).

The scientists found a consistent positive association between depressive symptoms and the frequency of viewing adult content. During every single wave of the survey, individuals who watched more pornography tended to report more depressive symptoms. This relationship held true regardless of the participants’ age, gender, or personal moral beliefs about the content.

The covariates in the study also revealed some interesting background patterns within the data. Younger age was a strong predictor for both higher pornography use and more frequent depressive symptoms. Being female predicted higher depressive symptoms but a much lower frequency of viewing adult content.

Moral disapproval of adult media predicted a lower frequency of actually viewing the content. Interestingly, this strong moral stance was completely unrelated to a person’s level of depressive symptoms. Holding a negative moral view of adult content did not make a person more or less likely to feel depressed overall.

    2. I hate studies that talk about association. Yes I understand their value, but they are almost always interpreted backwards.

I think it is far more likely people are using various pleasurable activities to try to ease off depression symptoms, and are likely to be more depressed when those activities are taken away.

That is the equivalent of saying “higher doses of depression meds are associated with more depression” yah of course they are but taking the medicines away doesn’t help

In this study here, they focus on “excessive and dysregulated use” but why are people engaging in that “dysregulated use” it ie because they aren’t achieving pleasure in “regulated use”

    3. This paper does not say it’s a cause. It could also be that people with depression already are more likely to view pornography as a form of relief from the symptoms.

I remember the case of a soldier at a war fapping 10 times each day to stop thinking in the war horrors.

the vice was a consequence of the desperation, not the opposite.

honestly this isn’t surprising and I’m glad more studies are looking at the intersectionality of mental health and porn addiction

I kinda feel like the most important variables aren’t there even if the cause/consequence of the association night be reversed.

Like it’s easily possible and believable that something would cause both depression and porn addiction. Like being single or unable to get sex one way or another (sex less mariage, no game ,etc.)

What is it about humanity that make normal sexual expression such a taboo thing? Someone explain it to me like I am five because no one acts like this when any other sexually reproductive species.

    8. So I’m not just horny, single without a dating life. I’m also depressed. I guess I just have to be single without a dating life and deal with the natural urges by watching paint dry.

    9. It’s basic neurochemistry. Your brain adapts to getting intense dopamine hits all the time. In between these episodes of dopamine hits, your brain is in a state of miserable dopamine withdrawal. Just like withdrawing from crack cocaine, nicotine etc but kinda worse because porn is free and easily available. You can’t think, experience happiness, or feel confident. It takes at least 6 weeks of abstaining for your brain to rewire.

People with primary depression have no libido so people saying depression causes an unhealthy porn habit is just a way from them to justify not doing anything about their addiction.

People in the comments really don’t want to think too much masturbating causes depression.

My energy and mood drop hard when I go more than a few times a week.

Maybe just maybe people would be better off with less.

And yes, correlation va causation is real but this seems to have struck a nerve.

I’m depressed because I can’t get a girlfriend. Nobody ever likes me back. I think about how ridiculous that I just look for intimacy in porn.

    12. “People who lie about watching pornography also lie about depressive symptoms”

    13. I’d bet people who struggle to tear themselves away from porn struggle to tear themselves away from other things too. Doomscrolling, for example.

    14. I’m guessing the frequency of pornography viewing is also probably strongly related to being single. Which might have a relation to depressive symptoms.

Wording the headline in a way that, to a general audience, implies causation is not only irresponsible, but is also a beach of scientific ethics. In my opinion, at least.

Damn. I was born clinically depressed, and I don’t even have the benefit of blaming pornography (which I loathe anyhow).

The next study will inform us that pornography successfully treats clinical depression.

Glad the researchers are stressing this isn’t a causal link. Idk how many studies like this we have to do before people understand it’s not a causal issue, it’s correlation.

This is such a clickbait title. Difficult thoughts and feelings lead to all kinds of unhealthy behavior, including, but not limited to drugs, alcohol sex, binge eating, gambling, extreme views, and beliefs….

Depressed people press the dopamine button more often. Weather at 11:00.

    19. stonk_monk42069 on

What about the other way around? So depressed people watch more porn?

    20. Isn’t this true of all behaviors that make you feel good? Comfort eating? Drinking? Smoking weed? Jacking off is right in there.

    21. I, on the other hand, am very happy and have ADHD. I just like to watch porn and wank a lot

    22. SolarPoweredKeyboard on

I watch porn and I have a pretty good life and no depression as far as I know.

    23. Brain dead study, of course depressed people will seek out dopamine as a respite from their condition

    24. Future-Engineering68 on

Porn affects weak people with little to no social life, they depend on it for companionship and affection

    25. Most Redditers will argue and do anything but take accountability and responsibility for their destructive behavior that leads to the consequences of their failures.
