But then there’s a youtube video of a dog beginning to drag a child away on the driveway of his house and the family’s cat comes like bolt of lightning attacking the dog who runs away.

Cats weren’t bred for this type of helpful behavior. Dogs were.

      So, duh?

    3. „In an experiment where a human feigned a heart attack, only 40% of cats even phoned for an ambulance.“

    4. “What’s not clear in this setup, however, is whether the cats didn’t understand the problem and didn’t care or *did* understand the problem and didn’t care. If it’s the former, then they’re clueless. If it’s the latter, then they’re selfish.”

Option 3: some cats responded but in a way researchers didn’t recognize. For all we know they could be talking to us in subsonic throat clicks and give up when they realize we aren’t listening.

I’ve had a couple of cats who were each incredibly distressed when I had syncope attacks. They successfully recruited help for me when I was laying on the floor and lick me in the inner elbow and eyelids until I woke up. There was a third boy kitty who seemed to not give a crap if one of the two girl cats was already on the scene, but I’m told he’d pace the perimeter when they were busy working on me.

My cat helps me by keeping the house mouse free. That’s good enough.

I don’t care. It’s scientifically proven that cats are a bazillion times better than dogs anyway.

We have an 18 month old baby who has recently started waking up scream-crying (like she’s having a bad dream) and our little black cat Ellie will come trotting out to her and circle her while gently rubbing and tail flicking her. When she calms down, Ellie lays next to her. We adore both of our girls

oh they would definitely eat us if we were small enough. thats why i love them

    9. I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure they’ve known for a long time that there’s not much difference in the intelligence and capacity of dogs and cats to solve problems, it’s just that cats are biologically wired to hyper-conserve energy.

So they won’t help, move, search, or do anything if it wastes even the slightest bit of energy.

      I love my cats.

That doesn’t change, even if they don’t love me. They show my wife and kids more affection than me. I’ve accepted that. I can accept this too.

I continue to love my cats.
